Vexille, CG Animation from the Producer of Appleseed

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

vexille.jpgKudos goes to 24framespersecond for this find on an upcoming sci-fi action CG animated film which sounds very promising. Its called Vexille and its directed by Fumihiko Sori, the director of Ping Pong and the producer of Appleseed. Heres the plot summary taken from the Shochiku films site:

2077 - 10 years has passed since Japan had decided to leave the United Nations to go into isolation. They have completely blocked the islands with an ultra magnetic field which prevents anyone to see what is going inside, nor for people to travel in/out of the country. This was a result to opposing to a treaty which UN has passed, preventing the development of all bio and robot technology which has evolved drastically and has become a threat to the human beings. When Japan finally begins to move, the US government sends in a special force team SWORD, lead by a female commander Vexille, to investigate what is really happening inside the closed country.

With just only a small pic (see left) and a plot summary to go by and it already got me curious to see more. According to the Shochiku films site, a "Private Promo Screenings" will be held at the Berlin EFM for potential film buyer. Its scheduled for release in Japan around August.

For all its flaws I find the new Appleseed extremely watchable, and have played parts of it many times to test my set-up (those movable fortresses are cool and LOUD).
Count me as very interested in this. Even if Vexille turns out to be a shallow exercise in technology I'll probably buy it.

APPLESEED was some of the creepiest shit I've ever seen. I was alright during the robot fights but as soon as those amateurishly motion-captured humanoid characters were on screen I was constantly shitting bricks in irrational fear and terror. There was just something extremely WRONG about how their bodies and faces movies, how they spoke... It gives me the creeps just thinking about it. The story was decent but I wish they had gone with a more "traditional" approach and by that I don't even mean cel animation because I'm not that much of a moron. Just ditch the whole motion capture thing, mmmmmmmmmmmmmkay?

When compared to the original Appleseed anime OVA (1988), Shinji Aramaki's CGI movie was a marked improvement both in story and execution although I agree that there was disappointment with the rendering of the human characters ("Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" was so much better in this respect). Masamune Shirow's "Appleseed" manga series remains one of my all time favorites. "Vexille" sounds like an interesting movie and I definitely look forward to learning more about it in the months to come.

I really enjoy Appleseed purely for the action and the cool visual so if Veville delivers something similar, I'll be content. The animation looks like it will lean closer to Final Fantasy: Advent Children than the cel-shaped look in Appleseed. I'll keep a close eye out for any news on it along with Appleseed 2 Ex Machina.
