Teruo Ishii's 'Blind Woman's Curse' (1970) with Meiko Kaji R1 USA DVD April 24th 2007.

(Posted In Action Asia Cult DVD News Drama Exploitation )

blindwomanscurse.jpegDiscotek back with another announced date for an early lead role of Meiko Kaji's. This is the first of the latest round of 70's exploitation / action classics from Japan to get a date set - fans of Panik House's releases of this kind of the past year or so should find this a no-brainer. Check the ever-inventive alternative titles, "Tattooed Swordswoman; The Blind Woman's Curse; The Haunted Life of a Dragon-Tattooed Lass. Black Cat's Revenge" - and it's only 85 frantic minutes long. Must see.

Synopsis, "Stunning 70's cult siren Meiko Kaji, star of the LADY SNOWBLOOD, FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION and STRAY CAT ROCK films, blasts off in her first headlining role! A novice yakuza boss in early 20th century Japan, she must defend her clan against a vengeful blind swordswoman (Hoki Tokuda), her bizarre hunchback servant (Tatsumi Hijikata), as well as villain Toru Abe’s gang of bloodthirsty killers. Director Teruo Ishii (FEMALE YAKUZA TALE, HORROR OF MALFORMED MEN) delivers a bizarre hybrid of Japanese horror and yakuza genres featuring a nomadic terror carnival, girls skinned alive for their tattooed epidermis, and a succession of brutal swordfights. Actress Kaji offers prime evidence of why she became the top female action star of 1970's Japan. One of the key cult films from Nikkatsu, the studio that also released the unforgettable, offbeat hit TOKYO DRIFTER." [Source : DVD Maniacs / Ryko Distribution].

This is the kind of film that's been overhyped mainly due to its lack of availability. I'm not saying that it isn't worth watching, just be aware that this has nothing in common with Teruo Ishii's excessive torture flicks like the hyperbolic synopsis seems to suggest. It's basically like Lady Snowblood (which was made 3 years later than this) but less stylish, less interesting and definitely less bloody.

Sadly, Caterpillar is right. This one is a tedious disappointment, and not nearly as entertaining as Panik House's Pinky Violence releases. Good thing Discotek has Chinese Torture Chamber Story and Ebola Syndrome coming up also, both of which more than live up to their reputations.

"Kaidan Nobori Ryuu" sounds like an interesting movie and I'm definitely curious to see it although I agree with Caterpillar and David that it will probably be a letdown. Has "Edogawa Ranpo Taizen: Kyofu Kikei Ningen" (Horror of the Malformed Man) been released to DVD yet? I remember Twitch announcing it's release but don't see it for pre-order yet. This is another movie where the film doesn't live up to the hype. It's another interesting movie to watch however.

As forgetabble as this might be i have to get it for one simple reason: Meiko Kaji, i love that woman.

Wow, I have to strongly disagree with caterpillar and David. This film is like a nice little summary of many of the things that make Japanese film so great: Meiko Kaji, butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata, an ero-guro freakshow, Teruo Ishii, blood and swords...

Jesus, its not that bad. Sure, it isnt too gonzo and Kaji has stronger films as a lead, but Blind Woman's Curse has just enough entertainment value to make it worth watching/owning.
