Big thanks to Aaron for sending me to the website for Melvin vs. E.T. - The History of Joaquín Blázquez. The film is a documentary about the life of famed Spanish comic artist and illustrator Joaquín Blázquez, who worked on Vampirella among others, who created an extraterristrial character with some striking similarities to the title characte in a rather successful film by Steven Spielberg. Convinced that Spielberg had stolen E.T. from him Blázquez became obsessed with suing the Hollywood giant before finally succumbing to a severe depression and death by the age of forty. It's certainly fascinating source material for a documentary and the website - which includes a trailer - certainly makes it look as though they're doing it justice.
Melvin vs ET Website (trailer lurking within)
Well Carlo Rambaldi (sp?) designed ET and he's Italian and I know alot of Spanish comics are published in Italy. Could be.
By judging the trailer I would say that the film looks very very uninteresting. The subject sounded quite interesting from what you said Todd and I would be interested if this documentary were actually about Joaquín Blázquez, however it appears to only be interested in arguing the guy's case that E.T. was stolen from his intellectual property.
What swarez said. It seems far more likely than Steven Spielberg thumbing through his collection of Spanish comic books and saying "Ah-HA, I am TOTALLY gonna use this." Hopefully the filmmakers tracked him down.
The complex vital history of Joaquín Blázquez, the thread of the documentary, develops in parallel with the generation of comic strip-makers that worked, through drawer agencies, for foreign countries, focusing mainly on those who published for the American publishing house “Warren Publishing”.
Through close interviews, archive images and some little recreations, we will enter into the tormented mind of Joaquín Blázquez and we will revise the period in which Spanish authors, who were internationally recognized, fought against what was established.
Who did the actual creature design of E.T?
I looked at the Melvin comic that's linked on the site. Melvin looks like E.T. only from the front and only in the head. From the side, Melvin is nothing like E.T.
