While most of the attention given to the current boom of Russian film is going to the genre efforts there seems to be no shortage of quality war films emerging from Moscow at the moment and just as the genre pictures are looking to strengthen and exploit ties to Hollywood and western Europe these bigger war pictures are looking to scoop bankable stars as well.
Cue up Фото По этапу (In Transit), a new film telling the story of a train load of German POWs mistakenly routed a women's prison used to house women in transit to the Gulag. Thanks to the war's toll on the population the prison wardens are all women who jump at the opportunity to take revenge against the German POWs for the death of their loved ones before gradually learning to see the prisoners as human beings, too.
The interesting bit of this comes in the casting. A Russian-American co-production the cast includes John Malkovich and Hannibal Rising's Ingeborga Dapkunaite in significant roles. The first batch of still shave been released from the picture and the production values look typically good.
