All but ignored by the press, my own particular favorite DVD release of the year was the "Heimat" trilogy. I caught "Heimat 1" on an excellent inexpensive French transfer but, unable to wait for the release of the following two installments, I purchased the elegant (if cumbersome) UK editions put out by Tartan and Artificial Eye. Back in November, an exquisite collector's set (16-DVD, 234 euros) was released in Germany, regrettably without English subtitles. A moderately priced French release of the entire trilogy (again without English subs) was announced a while back but hasn't materialized as of yet. Those wanting the trilogy but who balked at the prohibitive pricetag or the bulkiness of prior UK editions might be interested in the upcoming slimline releases of "Heimat 1" and "Heimat 2" announced for April 9. Although "Heimat 2" is the only one up for pre-order at the moment, it is not necessary to have watched "Heimat 1" to appreciate the film, which I consider to be the finest of the trilogy.
