Patrick Tam's much-awarded After This Our Exile - his return to the director's chair after a seventeen year absence netted him major wins at the Tokyo International Film Festival and Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards - will be hitting DVD in Hong Kong on February 14th. It's an all region release, and thus playable anywhere, with English subtitles included.
And should you be giving this as a Valentine's Day present? Err, no. I caught this when it played Toronto's Reel Asian Film Festival and it is a fantastically well made and hugely depressing family drama starring pop star Aaron Kwok - who won several awards for his performance - as an abusive, gambling addicted short order cook whose wife leaves him to care for his young son when she opts to pursue a better life with a better man. The core of the film revolves around Kwok and his son - played by remarkable child actor Ian Gouw Iskandar who also won a Golden Horse for his performance - as they drift aimlessly, the son being forced to support his father. So, not exactly cheery fare, but really quite good.

Sounds like a good date movie to me - I get to unleash the sensitive side, and because Aaron's an abusive schmuck in this from the sounds of it, I end up looking good by comparison. And I've always found Aaron Kwok to be underrated as an actor.
