Live Action of Go Nagai's 'Cutie Honey' (2004) Gets R4 Aus DVD February 7th 2007.

cutiehoney.jpegDon't ask me about the film, beyond it being a variation on one of Go Nagai's characters, all I know is condensed into these few words : people were gagging to see this one... a couple of years back.

Well, companies can't always act as dynamically as we would like (well, they look dynamic by accident more than intention most of the time), but they also don't seem to follow the online mood which gives pointers to interesting stuff because of various reasons - many of which are likely out of their hands, like excessive licensing costs and the like.

In step the eBay sellers with ultra-high ratings selling Region 0 Custom DVDs year-after-year without being stopped. Kind of torn over that whole thing, kind of abandoned eBay years ago anyway because it's a distraction, but because the market size is never clear for such films, and some stuff I've seen in listings simply hasn't appeared to have caused that initial scramble that's likely from any given company with interest.

Still struggle to believe that lessons from Piracy 101 have yet to be learnt. Yes, they may take their time to reveal their licensing choices, but they do tend to jump onto things rather than sift back through the broader range of possibilities, so I wouldn't have guessed this one would turn up in a country that largely seems to be lagging behind in contemporary choices and not throwing up that many older things either... stranger things have happened.

I don't have a trace of sympathy for Warner Bros, who were behind this movie. If they didn't want people bootlegging their stuff, they'd put it out themselves. They have SEVERAL DIVISIONS for just that, but they prefer to let bootleggers devalue the product and then wonder why nobody wants to pay their highway robbery prices for distribution rights on a title they could probably have made more money on selling themselves in a timely fashion.

As for the movie, I made it all of twenty minutes in before I cut off my BOOTLEG. This is what the director of EVANGELION came up with? Some animators can cross over to live action, and some really ought to stick to their day jobs. "Gagging" is an excellent choice of words. Maybe it's just not a film meant for me, but I didn't enjoy what I saw of this in the slightest. I'd rather see Mamoru Oshii's live-action take on PORKY'S.

think it's unfair to judge his liveaction work based on this one film. anno's other live action films are excellent imo(love and pop, shikijitsu).

I dug this flick. Enjoyed the humor and the look of it. Plus the leading lady is one hot number. She could do a Honey Flash! on me any day of the week.

I'm willing to bet that Rhythm-X isn't a fan of Go Nagai's comic work or of any of the countless animes that were based on them. Anno did a great job capturing the wacky humor and campy charm of Nagai's creation and in my opinion that is a strong sign of his abilities as a director. He could have made stuck with making angsty emo melodramas but instead he successfully made a great comedy and a wonderful adaptation of CUTEY HONEY. If you want to see terrible Go Nagai based live action movies check out any of the KEKKOU KAMEN or HARENCHI GAKUEN flicks.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

It is unbridled geek glee. And it should've gotten a U.S. theatrical release.

If it's faithful to the original comics, that's to be praised - but it just left me cold (as pointed out above, I probably wouldn't be a fan of the source material, and my exposure to Nagai is very limited), as opposed to his very engaging work in the realm of animation. I was told it was his first live-action film, since that's evidently not the case, then I retract what I said about sticking to his day job. If his other live action stuff is angsty emo melodrama, then if nothing else the guy's got range, which is more than many directors can claim.

I wouldn't know how to begin to release it in US theaters or to sell it to an American audience, but Warners at least owed it a fair shake on DVD. Clearly, it has its fans.

Cutie Honey sucked. Hard. It was bad. Not even enjoyably bad. It jumps straight over enjoyably bad and into god-awful, mindbogglingly idiotic terrible garbage. Bad, bad, bad, bad. How anybody anywhere could enjoy this shit is completely beyond me.

I felt like I needed a shower after managing to make it through 15 minutes of it.

Clearly you have no soul.

I will pray to Cthulhu for you and your progeny.

Cthulhu saves! (In case he gets hungry later.)

Looks like this is the subbed version to get. The R1 comes out next week and Amazon is listing it as P&S.
