[Korean DVD News] Three New Titles Announced For February

Three new Korean titles are slated for release on DVD in late February: Seducing Mr. Perfect [Mr. 로빈 꼬시기] (2006), 200 Pound Beauty [미녀는 괴로워] (2006) and No Regrets [후회하지 않아] (2006). The comedy Seducing Mr. Perfect, starring heartthrob Daniel Henney and Eom Jeong-hwa [엄정화] (Princess Aurora) and recounting the love story of a Korean-American boss and his female assistant, relied on Henney's charms to woo female viewers. Selling fewer than 700,000 tickets, the picture was quickly withdrawn from theaters and failed to break even. Some said that there was so much English dialogue that non-Koreans had no need of subtitles to follow the plot. Plastic surgery comedy 200 Pound Beauty, released December 14 and which as of last week recorded a whopping 5,718,700 admissions, is the first time a film has broken the 5 million mark since War of Flowers, topping everyone's favorite My Sassy Girl (4.88 million admissions). Directed by Kim Yong-hwa, the film is an adaptation of a popular Japanese series of comics by Suzuki Yumiko. In the movie, Kim Ah-joong plays Han-na, who works as a lip sync vocalist for a famous Korean pop singer. Although she has a great voice, no one thinks she looks good enough to go onstage. She suffers from extremely low self-esteem because of her physical appearance and decides to get full-body plastic surgery. Director Lee Song Hee-Il's [이송희일] No Regrets, which centers on the relationship between a male escort and a wealthy client, sold over 12 thousand tickets on its opening weekend, no mean feat for a gay themed independent film in Korea. All three DVDs are scheduled for release February 28.
