Malaysian film maker Yasmin Ahmad has been stirring up equal parts controversy and acclaim since making her debut with Sepet a few years back and she's a film maker I've long wanted to check out for myself. But thanks to her films scarcely travelling outside of her homeland at all and my attempts at buying DVDs directly from Malaysia being, shall we say, less than successful I have, to this point, been stymied. But no more!
Ahmad's second film Gubra - every bit as acclaimed as Sepet - has received an English subtitled DVD release in Singapore and MovieXclusive have just gotten it back into stock. MY first shipment from these guys is on the way now but I've had nothing but good reports about them and it looks as though, just as is proving to be the case with most new Thai film, Singapore is going to be the source of choice for Malaysian DVD as well.
