Magnolia Pictures have just acquired all rights to new American horror flick The Signal at Sundance and the film - helmed by the trio of David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry, and Dan Bush - and the Sundance synopsis makes this thing sound like an Americanized spin on Japanese techno-horror (i.e. Ringu or One Missed Call) fused with good ol' fashioned zombies. Check it out:
Imagine every cell phone, radio, and television in your city suddenly broadcasting the same mysterious signal over and over. Now imagine these "terminus" transmissions evoking violent, uncontrollable, psychotic chaos from everyone who comes in contact with them.
The Signal invades the minds of everyday citizens living their workaday lives and having their sordid affairs. Suddenly struck by the power of the insidious transmissions, they are compelled to kill or be killed. Complicating matters is a zombielike resistance some characters have to the idea of remaining dead. The story violently explodes, blending bloody gore with psychological satire, for a truly original horror experience.
Nice.

Wait. Wasn't this the plot of the Stephen King story "Cell" that Eli Roth is slated to direct? I smell a lawsuit.
Wait a sec... Isn't this basically the storyline for Stephen King's "The Cell"???
Yes, but this trailer looks better than anything directed by Eli Roth could ever be.
Man, if you think that's BETTER than Roth, I'd hate to see what you think was worse.
I've seen acting classes with better skills.
A bunch of random acts of violence set to a trendy ironic tune does not a trailer make.
I find the acting in the trailer pretty decent. It's a bit hard to determine if the performances are really good, but i'm definitely checking this flick out when it hopefully plays at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival or otherwise i'll check it out on DVD.
I wasn't blown away by this trailer at all. Looked like 28 Days Later with more actors and lower budget. But people seem to like it, according to reports from Sundance so there must be something about it.
Damn, I had the same idea for a movie years ago but did nothing with it. :(
It looks like it could be pretty good. I've seen worse trailers for bigger budget films.
Seconded the "better than Roth" sentiment.
The Cell was published a month after The Signal wrapped shooting
yes, but the book was finished a year before the film was started
