Long out of print in any sort of English-friendly format Shunya Ito's 1972 J-sploitation classic Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 is hitting DVD in the UK on February 19th and the good people at Eureka Video have given us two copies of the new DVD release to give away to you, the Twitch faithful. Want one? Of course you do ... to enter the contest just drop me an email telling me which OTHER major cult series star Meiko Kaji starred in during the 1970s.
We'll be accepting entries until February 10th.
For the videophiles out there it is worth noting that this release does indeed appear to be a port of the earlier Image transfer. It has been confirmed to me by Eureka that this edition features burned in subtitles which would indicate the same source as the Image disc.
Burned in subtitles plus the wonderful ghosting you're bound to get with any NTSC-to-PAL format conversion... Yeah, sounds like a real winner of a DVD!
I want to send a pissed off Sasori over to Eureka's headquarters...
I don't really understand this, as a remastered version was released in Japan a few years back. The print used for the Image version was in relatively rough shape.
Why didn't they port the Studio Canal transfer from France? It's a good transfer (own the dvd), although a bit too bright. It's much less cropped than Toei. Other Studio Canal transfers have been ported to European coutries and even Australia several times in the past.
Now I don't regret cancelling my pre-order.
Is it cheaper to sub-license the film through Image instead of Toei?
Ah well time to order the French dvd because I don't feel like growing any older waiting for an Aussie release.
Mikko Koivisto is right. Comparing the Image transfer to the Studio Canal transfer at the site DevilDead around a year ago, I decided to go for the French release. It appears to be far superior to the R1 transfer now inexplicably being used for the current UK DVD.
there's a screenshot comparison for Image, Studio Canal and Toei at asiandvdguide forum
The French version doesn't do anyone much good unless they speak Japanese or French, at least this release has English subs even if they are burned in...
Still a shame they'd put out such a shoddy release..
