Remastered "Berlin Alexanderplatz" To Be Screened At 57th Berlinale

Back in October I posted an article mentioning a forthcoming DVD release of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's epic "Berlin Alexanderplatz", possibly by the Criterion label. A reader has informed me that a remastered version of Fassbinder's TV miniseries will screened at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival in February. This raises hopes that the long overdue DVD of what some consider to be Fassbinder's ultimate masterpiece can't be too far off in the future. The Gala –Premiere on February 9, which will screen parts 1 & 2, will be attended by the stars Günter Lamprecht, Hanna Schygulla, Barbara Sukowa and Gottfried John. The proceedings will be accompanied by Max Raabe & Palast Orchester and the film will be projected in High Definition. The entire series will be shown on Feb 11. The Berlinale press release dated Jan 16 reads,

"In honour of the 25th anniversary of the death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a carefully restored version of his most radical and personal work will be screened for the first time during the Berlinale: Berlin Alexanderplatz is considered the highpoint of the career of Germany’s most successful post-war director. The screen adaptation of the Alfred Döblin novel was originally produced in 13 episodes and an epilogue for television and was broadcast in 1980. For Berlin Alexanderplatz: Remastered, the original 16mm material was restored digitally. The project was initiated by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and Bavaria Media and made possible through the joint efforts of several funding organisations. The leading cast of the film is expected to attend the gala premiere in the Admiralspalast theatre. The film will then be shown in its full length several times as a Berlinale Special at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz as well as in Cinemaxx 4."
