Let me jog your memory, Grasshoppa! is the company behind one of last years favourites around here - 'Nice No Mori' aka 'Funky Forest' or 'The First Contact' - and they also did 'Taste of Tea' too.
Good company. Really nice, solid, individual approach that's perhaps also a little more like you would expect Japanese films to be - gentle, deep, touching, funny, intelligent. This film then, although I can't recall solid information about it right now, also stars Koji Yakusho, a man who remains a firm favourite in this side of the globe for his very subtle performances and charm. I want this, badly.

very "meryl streep"-turn from suzuki... who looks to outact yakusho, hehe! for some reason music sounds like a throwback to the values-validation decade of 70s blockbusters, like Castle of Sand...of course quirky exiles are typical 70s Imamura & other post-student movement topics.
The movie looks amazing! I can't wait for it to come out (has a release date been announced?).
Also, does anybody know how Yoshimoto Nara (guy who did the painting above) is involved? I remember how Katsuhito ISHII included animated sequences in his Taste of Tea, so perhaps there'll be something similar here?
I finished watching the Korean edition of The Taste of Tea last night, what a gem this film is! And the transfer is strong, too, better than I remember it being on the French copy I picked up last year. And to think it had to wait some four years to find an American distributor! It hadn't occurred to me until you posted this, but I really should do myself a favor and check out some other titles in the Grasshoppa! catalogue...
I'm also curious about Yoshimoto Nara's involvement. He's one of my favorite artists.
Good find. I'll give any Grasshoppa! film a chance. (I just ordered a copy of Custom Made 10.30 based on the preview on the "Nice no Mori" DVD even though it lacks English subtitles.)
This post made me go check out Banana Yoshimoto's original novel from my university library today. I haven't started reading it yet, but it's really interesting -- filled with drawings and photographs by Yoshitomo Nara and with English and Japanese text running side-by-side.
yoshitomo nara fans should know theres a doc coming this summer :
