Buyer Beware ...

(Posted In Random Geek Talk )

As the amount of Russian film we cover here on Twitch has increased it has become increasingly clear just what a wild, no holds barred sort of industry Russia has, including the overwhelming prevlalence of bootleg DVDs flooding the market. Thought Asia had a bootleg problem? Russia's may well be worse with large scale, seemingly professional retailers routinely creating their own bootleg editions rather than selling official releases and lining their own pockets with the profits with nary a cent heading back to the official rights holders. We're not fans of bootleggers here. It's bad for the industry and ultimately bad for us as film fans. We've said it before and we'll say it again, if you're looking for a good, English friendly, bootleg free retailer of Russian DVDs the one you should look at - and the only one that we can recommend in good conscience with all of the other major online sites hit with bootleg product - is AllDVD.ca.

One exception to that worth mentioning I think -- moviexclusive.com -- the singapore etailer you featured a week or two back -- appears to have the only legit release period of Bimmer subtitled (not available subbed in Russia). Granted I'm waiting till the end of the month when I knock out some bills to order it.

A very good point. There are sources of Russian films outside of Russia that ARE legitimate releases. The problem is sites like Russiandvd.com cranking out their own bootleg editions ...
