This is really something that's an attempt to get our readership to speak up on what they enjoy about the site, with as much detail and effort to clarify what it is that keeps you coming back. You see, sitting here at a little machine and typing away is one thing, understanding how people see what you do (as an individual, as part of a team, as a site) is something that's partly guess work, partly a built-up picture in the mind, partly little snippets of reaction, and both partly abstract and real as a result.
Fascinated to hear, at the end of another year, what kind of different films you found interesting (this year, and back to the start of Twitch in September 2004), what you heard about here that you didn't seem to find elsewhere, what you do and don't like about the kind of coverage and how it's conveyed - for me, I love the blogging flow that's not defined or contrived into genres and preconcieved notions of worth in connection to origin, production costs, or its contemporary nature, that it's all fairly clear and doesn't require digging deep to find gems, but does need individual effort and input to apply it to your knowledge...
It's not a suggestion box being opened directly for us to react to, nor is it a bashing opportunity on offer - criticism is fine if it's contstructive (and I'm far from anti-criticism) and it's fine if it's defined, substantial, explained and offers solutions too, and it's best to keep in mind that this is your chance to communicate to us, the writers that are in our own little worlds, what the alternative perceptions of what we do could well be.
It's not about us trying to chase after things which are up for instant implementation as much as it's an opportunity (from me, off my own back, my own interest) to talk directly about your individual experiences and opinions in relation to this site, this site compared to other sites, the variety, the type of content, films you've enjoyed that your heard of around here, what you think (or hope for) in the future, and to clarify it as being (for want of a better phrase) nothing more than one single individual perspection from potentially many thousands.
I hope you've all had a great 2006, hope we all have a great 2007, hope that you've enjoyed a good, healthy, balanced diet of great films, and that it all continues for a long time to come...
I'm loving your work, as always. You continually turn me on (I'm not going to stop there, although the dramatic pause is good enough) to new films I'd never have looked at before, and that's a great thing.
What I would say is that I'd like to hear more from the UK market of smaller budget films, however I don't know it that really is Twitch's bag or if there's enough out there to qualify, but The Planet was a big surprise and I'm sure there's more of where that came from out there.
I will, as always, provide coverage for various festivals in Scotland - next year I'm hoping to attend not only Dead by Dawn and the EIFF, but also Glasgow and Inverness festivals.
Great work guys, and may all at Twitch (readers included) have a great holiday, and a wonderful 2007.
Yeah, I echoe Richard's thoughts. Great site all around. My only request -- more please! I can't get enough of hearing about small, obscure, fascinating cinema from around the world. Your site has helped to remedy my depression with Hollywood's creative bankruptcy. Happy holidays.
I know there has been talk of moving the site away from its blog roots, but I'll say that I think its blog structure is very important to what the site achieves. Most visitors appreciate the site for providing them information on films that they wouldn't normally research or already know something about. If there wasn't a main page where I could simply scroll down and scan all kinds of different news bits in a matter of seconds, it'd be a much different story for me. If the site had some main front with article titles and loglines and required me to make that extra click to read about something that I may not be already interested in, there wouldn't be many of those extra clicks. With the blog style, I can scroll down, scan the text, glance at the accompanying pics and be quickly turned on to all sorts of news pieces or films that I wouldn't otherwise read about. So I guess I just want to say that as much as the site's more unique content is great, the method in which it is delivered is equally important in getting my eyes to see it. I think the blog format has been a fantastic development for all kinds of news sources, simply because it forces the eye to see more of the individual news pieces, making it more likely that readers will check something out that they may not have already been inclined to be interested in.
If more organization is desired or making news types easier to find, I think article tagging is the key, not a change to the current site structure.
I read almost every day. I could live without 90$ of The Gomorrahizer's posts having a crime scene photo attached to it, personally. It's good to see the frequency of substantial interviews going up, and also nice that a lot of films have more than one review posted here.
I love the site pretty much as-is, though I wish you guys had a "previous" link at the bottom to go back and see posts that have scrolled away. Having to search for them is kind of difficult - was it a review, or an interview? was the trailer linked from the review, or from an update? A lot of work to track down something that was posted earlier in the week.
I went to Toronto After Dark and loved it, and I hate that I'll (probably) miss next year's while I'm in Seoul. Your coverage was great.
I'd like to see more coverage of made-in-Canada films. I know they exist. I can't find a single site out there to keep me up to date with what my fellow Canadians are shooting and screening. Twitch could be that site, maybe?
Rek. I've been meaning to take on More Canadian stuff as regular contributions, I'll admit that was a bit embarrassed to see that I'd seen so few of this years "Canada's top 10" films.
Perhaps in the new year. Thanks for the input.
Hands down the best film site on the internet. Run by peeps who know what good filmmaking is. i can't get through my day without stopping in. Thank you.
