One of the most coveted releases around here must be an English-friendly version of Katsuhito Ishii's magical The Taste of Tea. A region 1 release is in the works, to be distributed by VIZ Pictures. Those who can't wait are strongly urged to pre-order a copy from DVD From Korea, where they are offering an NTSC Region 3, 2-DVD version with Japanese audio and Korean and English subtitles. The picture is 16:9 enhanced for widescreen televisions and extras include trailer, 'The Taste of Tea at Cannes' and Making Of. Released by Widemedia, the digipack presentation looks lovely, and only 1,000 LE copies will be available.
While you are there, you might consider purchasing what many believe to be the greatest Korean TV drama ever made, The Eyes of Dawn. Although Yes Asia is selling the MBC drama, it isn't available yet in North America (though I assume it will be). The mini-series' 1,300 minutes are spread out over 10 discs, and of course, it is English subtitled. This classic show was initially supposed to come out last year, but there were problems with the video. X wrote at the time that, problems or no, they should release this program, which he considers to be the finest ever, period.
Pre-order DVD (Available Dec 23)
If this is one of the rare R3 LEs that subtitle the supplemental stuff I will definately be picking this up. Otherwise I can wait for the US release.
FYI, the Japanese R2 release also has English subs...
yeah, i own the japanese.
good quality and english subtitles.
better movie than funky forrest IMHO.
no subs on extras but i dont care
I own the Japanese DVD too, Korean one sounds like a 1/1 copy really (apart from the Korean subs).
For those of you living in Belgium or The Netherlands, there's a local release too. Very nice indeed.
I really wish I had the Japanese LE which has the books that grandpa made in the film.
I ought to have written, "an affordable English-friendly edition (the Japanese standard edition runs $46). While I have no way of knowing about the subbing of special features, I'm fairly certain that the packaging will knock the socks off any American release.
Also, I can't conceal the fact that I'm a little disappointed that nobody seems to be interested in "The Eyes of Dawn." "Sandglass," by the same team, was one of the best Korean releases in the past year (feature films included), and not only is it a great introduction to Korean TV drama, it is also a must for anyone with an interest in recent Korean history. While I don't watch much TV, it has some of the highest production values I've seen for something of this kind. So, when X says that it's predecessor is even better, I know that this must be something special.
There definetly won't be any subtitles on those extras - I've never seen a Korean release for a Japanese film where they would have gone the trouble of translating the extras into English.
Looks like a good release, contains everything the Japanese LE does, except the beautiful box and the book replicas. I'm fairly certain it will be a port image quality wise of the Japanese disc.
As for the Korean series mentioned. I'm personally not too keen on picking up any Korean releases at this time. All the Korean titles I've seen recommended lately have been huge letdowns; The host, king and the clown and that one series which name eludes me at the moment, to name a few...
I had to go and preorder this after actually seeing the film. I picked this edition and a Director's cut of Princess-D for just under $34, with free shipping. Can't beat that!
