Canada's Top Ten Announced

Every year the good people at the Toronto International Film Festival Group assemble a jury of industry types to select the ten best Canadian films of the year, films which are then given screenings at the Cinematheque Toronto, often with the film makers in attendance. And given the incredibly short runs Canadian films get here in Canada - if they screen at all - this is often the only chance locals get to see these things.

Well, this year's list has been announced and the top ten are:

Away From Her: Sarah Polley
Congorama: Phillipe Falardeau
Un Dimanche a Kigali: Robert Favreau
The Journals of Knud Rasmussen: Zacharias Kunuk, Norman Cohn
Manufactured Landscapes: Jennifer Baichwal
Monkey Warfare: Reg Harkema
Radiant City: Gary Burns, Jim Brown
Sharkwater: Rob Stewart
Sur La Trace D'Igor Rizzi: Noel Mitrani
Trailer Park Boys The Movie: Mike Clattenberg

Heh. Check out that last entry. Most of the list is what you'd expect from this sort of thing, serious art film most of the way through, and then you get to The Trailer Park Boys, Canadian icons if ever there were any ...

This is a great list sporting some excellent titles, particularly "Away From Her" which is a great first film for Canadian celeb Sarah Polley. I'm a bit surprised by the last one too but it only played for a couple of weeks and true, they are as much of a Canadian Icon as they come!

Canadian Icon yes, but the movie was complete Shite!

That movie was the first step the TPB took towards selling out, the movie was not for fans of the show, and was way too fucking broad to be even funny half the time.

This coming from the guy who owns every season on DVD including the awsome Christmas Special. Everything they have done prior to this has been comedy gold, and I dont even recall if I even laughed out loud at this movie.

Sad state of affairs indeed when it makes Canada's Top 10.
