Slamdance: Indies, Premieres, and Zombies

(Posted In Film News Random Festival News USA and Canada )

slamdance_2007.jpgSlamdance, which styles itself as the younger, brattier cousin to Sundance -- but has grown into something more akin to a rival fraternal twin festival -- announced most of its line-up today.

Competion-wise, two jumped out at me: American Zombie, a mockumentary about a group of zombies struggling to gain acceptance in a human community, directed by Grace Lee (who made the well-received doc The Grace Lee Project); and Seth Gordon's King of Kong, an actual doc about "diehard gamers" trying to break world records on classic arcade games.

Among the special screenings, Weirdsville (official site) could stand out: two friends try to bury a body and "their plan would have worked too, if they didn’t happen to stumble upon a Satanic cult in the midst of performing a ritual sacrifice." Directed by the wildly uneven Allan Moyle (IMDB page). Playing in the 21+ Screenings is Cold Prey, a Norwegian thriller we've written about before, most recently here.

The 13th edition of Slamdance runs January 18-27, 2007, and you can find out more at the official site.
