Teaser trailer for Katsuhide Motoki's KITARO (GEGEGE NO KITARÔ)

(Posted In Action Asia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

gegege_no_kitarou.jpgThe official website for Katsuhide Motoki's Kitaro (Gegege no Kitarô) is now functional, and there's a teaser trailer for the movie on that site. Shochiku Co. Ltd. (Shôchiku K.K.) plans to release the movie theatrically in Japan in late April/early May of next year.

The screenplay for Kitaro was written by Daisuke Habara, based on the eponymous manga serial by Shigeru Mizuki. The movie stars (listed order corresponds to order on official website) Eiji Wentz (Uentsu Eiji), Mao Inoue, Rena Tanaka, Yô Ôizumi, Gô Rijû, Satoshi Hashimoto, You, Kanpei Hazama, and Shigeru Muroi.

Here's a description of Kitaro from ShochikuFilms.com - Shochiku's English-language website: "A popular animation series and comic book is finally adapted into a live-action film for the first time, using cutting-edge CGI companies all over the world, including Centro Digital Pictures (Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) based in Hong Kong. ¶ "Gegege No Kitaro" (original title) is directed by Katsuhide Motoki (Free & Easy series, Drugstore Girl); it stars Eiji Wentz (voice - Brave Story) from the popular duo WaT, and renowned actor Yo Oizumi (voice - Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away). ¶ Kitaro is a young specter (yokai) who lost his parents at birth. His father's soul lives in one of his eyeball. Raised within the specter clan, Kitaro also keeps an eye on the human society, and fights the evil monsters in order to save the human beings from the threats from another world."

Thank you Gomorrahizer for posting this! I'm hoping that "Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro" will be as good as or better than Miike's similarly themed "Yokai Daisensou/Great Yokai War" but have my doubts. I haven't seen any of Katsuhide Motoki's movies (Tsuribaka Nisshi 12 & 13 and Drugstore Girl) but he seems to be an odd choice for a director. I'm a big fan of the "Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro" 80's anime so I'm certainly interested in seeing this (although it won't be until "Golden Week" [April 29-May 5] in Japan before this gets released.
