I realize I'm late on this... but you may have an opinion on it and nowhere to voice it... News about a Quentin Tarantino project doesn't necessarily blow wind up my skirt anymore but considering this news is in regards to two films that heavily influenced western film's identity in the mid to late 90s, two of my favorite films from that decade I thought it noteworthy to post.
I wondered why CityonFire called it Quentin to "homage" John Woo in Vega spin-off? in their link to an article stating that the spin-off story of the Vega brothers, played by Michael Madsen and John Travolta in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction respectively, was back on track. Then I realized what they were doing when I read the article. How would you do the spin-off? Both actors are older so the idea of a prequel is out of the picture. So how do you get the Vega brothers together in a film. Easy. You rummage through your DVD collection one night and pull out A Better Tomorrow 2 and say to yourself as you watch it, 'Holy Crap, that's it! That's how I'll get the Vega brothers together on the big screen!'.
According to Madsen, however, the maverick director has come up with an ingenious plan to make the film happen after all. He told Moviehole.net: "Well, first he said he would do it, then he said he wasn't going to do it. Then he called me and said, 'You know, I've figured out a way to do it. It can't be a prequel because you and John don't look the same. "It wouldn't make sense as a sequel because you're both dead.' And he gave me an idea that would be really outrageous - that John and I would be the twin brothers of Vic and Vincent. We come from Amsterdam to LA to avenge the deaths of our brothers. I think that's pretty interesting. For me, I'd love to do it."
And if you've seen A Better Tomorrow 2 that news and the CityonFire quip both make sense now. And if you haven't seen ABT2, what the hell have you been doing all these years? Clearly one of the greatest climactic gun battles to have ever been caught on film. Okay. Let me spell it out for the unknowing: Chow Yun-fat plays Mark in A Better Tomorrow, in which he dies. He plays Mark's twin brother Ken in A Better Tomorrow 2, and he flies from New York to HK to wreak bloody revenge on a triad gang.
My idea for a John Woo homage? It goes way back to my college days with Todd. A theological debate between Calvinism and Arminianism, with guns, like the stand off in The Killer.
Hopefully it will show a bit of gunplay, but they need a third , Dean Shek-like, person to be in this. I propose Mr. Pink.
Are they confusing John Woo with Ringo Lam again? ;)
No, Woo directed A BETTER TOMORROW 2. Lam directed CITY ON FIRE.
Oh my god. Quentin is an idiot.
That sounds so kwazy that it just might work. I'd watch it.
I think QT has been hanging out with doofuses like Eli Roth too much. What a moronic idea! Twins from Amsterdam!?!?!?!!!
My question is how exactly are the brothers going to get their revenge? Mr. Blonde's killer (Mr. Orange) died himself...and the last anyone saw Butch (Vincent's killer), he was headed for, what? Mexico? So, um, will this take place South of the Border? Will Bruce Willis be back?
This is such a dumb idea.
name the last tarantino movie you didnt like.
its true, the first thing that sprang to mind when i heard the idea was; oh no, tarantino's going to ruin a perfectly good run, and two perfectly good characters doing this. then it also occured to me that tarantino excels working with this kind of stuff; weird, far-fetched, maybe even a little bit stupid (see his scene in sin city), and this vega brothers thing seems to just fit the bill. i will see it if/when it comes out, but until then im going to keep a neutral mind on this. hell, i hate john travolta, but love vincent vega, so well see what other magic tarantino has left...
dude...i dont even care about the plot. all i want to see is vega bros whooping some good ol ass in amsterdam. prequel? they could do that shit. they made anthony hopkins look pretty young in hannibal...QT...please make this movie.
