Wisit Sasanatieng's brilliant psychedelic Thai western Tears of the Black Tiger has been trapped alone and unloved in the Miramax vaults for years now. Subjected to a dramatic recut and the dumped like last week's girlfriend prospects for the film's release on any format has looked bleaker than bleak for a good long time, a situation that has caused me no end of frustration because this is simply a fantastic film that needs to be seen. Well, the wait is coming to an end ...
Having tried to get their hands on it for a good long time now the people at Magnolia Pictures have finally succeeded in buying North American rights to the film from Miramax and plan a theatrical release in early 2007 with a DVD to follow. Think they'll be using the Miramax butcher job? Nope, I don't either. The deal actually went down early at AFM this year but those of us who heard about it were asked to keep it hush hush until official word went out. Which, honestly, still hasn't happened but since Landmark Theatres - a sister company to Magnolia - have now listed the film in their upcoming releases it seems foolish to keep quiet any longer ...
Thanks to Brian and Maya for pointing out the Landmark listings ...
On no. I was hoping the Weinsteins to give this movie a "strong" release . :P
I've been looking for a real copy of the Thai release after seeing Citizen Dog and AFFD a few months ago. Out of print and hard to find, let's hope the theatrical release isn't the UK etc cut version
The article says the film was bought from Miramax, so the Weinsteins didn't have it anymore, it was left behind at Disney.
Why? Well, at some point the Weinsteins decided they liked the word "dragon" a lot better than the word "tiger", and bought a bunch of randomly chosen films with the word "dragon" in their title and started an Asian films division called Dragon Dynasty.
That's how grown-ups make important business decisions.
Not sure about that UK cut comment. Unless the Thai cut is drastically different from my R3 Singapore DVD (never been able to pick up the R3 Thai one), the R2 Brit DVD is considerably bloodier (in a few specific shots), but tighter in plotting and characters IMO. My expanded (but probably not exhaustive list of differences is here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=280504&highlight=tears+black+tiger
I'm considering picking up the French and/or German R2 dvds of this one as well if they have [subtitled] extras different from the Singapore R3 (the R2 UK is unfortunately barebones). Cheesy though it may be, I do end up being a somewhat nerdy completist on a few things every now and then ("The Goon" by Eric Powell is another one).
Josh: Are you a member of Greenine? They have a copy in their roster that you can rent. I think it's the original Thai version. Not absolutely sure, though.
This is good news, eh Todd? I can't wait to see these colors on a big screen.
wow! my hope is restored -- this means that there are people that care about Film rather than just sitting on properties. Maybe we can start a Weinstein Vault Rescue Fund? "Won't you please help?"
I thought the Weinsteins had the ending changed and that Five Star and Wisit were pretty upset. I'd be interested to know which cut they are showing.
We'll be releasing the original version that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001.
