A Look At The Two Disc Release Of Dog Bite Dog

(Posted In Action Asia DVD News Drama )

DBD-poster.jpgDog Bite Dog grabs you by the back of the neck and body slams you into the mud. Before you can catch your breath, your face is scraped along a broken concrete highway, leaving a long, bloody trail. All that's left is for a speeding truck to crush your head like a grape. So said our own Peter Martin in his very detailed look at the single disc release of Soi Cheang's Dog Bite Dog.

I find myself enormously in agreement with Peter's take on the film so rather than cranking out a lesser version of his excellent review I'll simply take a look at the new additions to the package that come with this new two disc release ... read on for a breakdown of the features and a series of screen captures.

As already mentioned by Peter the key feature to either edition of Dog Bite Dog is the stellar - and English subtitled - commentary track involving all the key behind the camera personnel plus a small group of fans asking them questions and offering comments. It's a bold approach that works remarkably well.

The second disc is filled to the gills with good stuff as well, all of it left as raw as suits this sort of film. Outside the photo gallery and an eight minute reel of deleted scenes all of the rest of the disc is filled with what essentially comes down to b-roll, behind the scenes footage, broken up and presented thematically. There is an over-arching feature that runs slightly over an hour; a nine minute sequence that features Soi directing his actors through the initial assassination sequence - notably encouraging star Edison Chen to be more rough with the elderly woman he is supposed to be killing; four minutes of Chen practicing his Cambodian; seventeen minutes devoted to showcasing how remarkably light things were behind the scenes on the set of this very dark film with cast and crew generally clowning around to keep loose; and finally three minutes taking us through the site preparation and shooting of the back alley pursuit and fight sequence. Just as the commentary track was remarkably bold these behind the scenes features are also remarkably intimate, showcasing Soi's working style in unusual detail.

the 2-disc felt hit and miss for me, the extras (apart from the commentary) are unnecessarily split-down, though that helps us take them in with small bites, and the 'cast and crew interviews' mentioned in the specs (on the artwork of the sleeve) are missing - they were completely edited out due to some sensitive comments (i think) rather than edited - still, this 2-disc corrects the transfer problem and it looks damn good now. great film, lovely image quality and the sound is huge and booming too...

I thought this film was great, the look and style, the camera angles, top acting and as said above the sound is awesome too. This is one film that has left me with images from it for days now. Also thought the extras were excellant, have wacthed all but not played the commentary yet, but certainly will soon.

I found it rather odd that the image contained many small dirt particles and scratches for a newly released film.
