Toki o Kakeru Shoujo or Toki o Kakeru Shojo? A Canadian Animated Festival and an American Live Action Series

(Posted In Random Festival News )

TokioKakeruShoujo.jpgTwo events going on in November are worth noting.

The first is the 6th Annual Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema. Showcasing several North American and Canadian premieres including Kirikou and the Wild Beasts, The Girl Who Lept Through Time, Russia's Dobrynia Nikitich and the Serpent Gorynych and Thailand's Khan Kluay. Also on the programme is the complicated and confrontational Princess, as well as the beautiful CGI Yonna in the Solitary Fortress. In the Speaker series, director Michael Nguyen returns to Waterloo to share his love of animation in a special 150-minute presentation titled The Root of Traditional Animation: a look at how its spirit transforms its techniques. If you are in Kitchener- Waterloo, Ontario (just outside Toronto) lots of animated delicacies await. Nov. 16-19th

The second is a series features five live action 'Japanese sailor suit' hit films from the 1980s, rarely before seen in the United States, and starring Japanese pop stars known as “idols”. Delving into a world where teenage girls command yakuza gangs, travel through time and get trapped in boys' bodies, Lolita in Full Bloom:1980s Irresistible Heroines features five trailblazing films. Rarely seen in the States, these films are revived for two weeks with new English subtitles, created by the Japan Society especially for this series. This event is happening in New York City from November 10th - 19th.

Full Schedules and times for both are after the Jump.

waterloo? small stuff compared to the ottawa international animation festival which I think you missed covering...

"The Ottawa International Animation Festival is the largest event of its kind in North America and one of the most respected animation events in the world."

http://ottawa.awn.com/

pop it on your radar for next year!

I've got a soft-spot for Waterloo where I was introduced to Anime in the early 1990s via pristine laserdiscs shown by the "Club That Really Likes Anime", aka "CTRL-A." I have to admit that I was not aware of the Ottawa festival, but then again, it is schedule at the end of September when I'm totally burned out after the Toronto Film Festival (which you must also be...in spades!).

I'm envious for all the guys in New York who will be able to see the Japan Society's "Lolita In Full Bloom" film showings. I recently purchased IVL's Kadokawa Collection releases of Harada Tomoyo's "Tokikake" and Yakushimaru Hiroko's "W No Higeki" and "Tantei Monogatari". These are wonderful films! I kind of miss these type of 80s idol films along the likes of Kikuchi Momoko's "Tera Senshi Boy" and Saito Yuki's "Yushun" [Oracion]. I'm not familiar with "Typhoon Girls" and "Exchange Girls" films but they sound interesting.
I'm curious to see the animated version of "Tokikake" and see how it matches to the original novel and movie.

Ottawa is a mostly shorts festival, Waterloo is all feature films. Ottawa is cool, so is Waterloo
