Twenty Stills From Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower

(Posted In Asia Drama Film News Martial Arts )

goldenflower01small.jpgAs the December release of Zhang Yimou's latest wuxia epic, The Curse of the Golden Flower, we can no doubt expect a torrent of imagery from the film and we have what appears to be the opening salvo. Sony Pictures Classics have released twenty still images from the film - a few have been seen before, most have not - and while both Hero and House of Flying Daggers were both noted for their use of color what we're seeing from this one makes those previous efforts look positively tame by comparison.

Interesting stills with a abundency of golden colors, but I guess that's not that strange considering the movie's title. Anyway, I'll be anxiously waiting for Yimou's new pic, he always manages to pull it off.

is it me or does this movie have a lot of cleavage?

personally, i think yimou has lost the plot...
like hero and daggers, just more eye candy for the idiot generation.
and these stills look gaudy as hell...he's gone colour mad.

get back to making real films yimou!! the road home, raise the red lantern, not one less, etc
i miss you

This film looks really promising... especially by the fact that Gong Li and Zhang Yimou are back! (professionally speaking of course)

the gaudy colors and empire waist lines are really starting to bug me. there was no such thing in classical china, not to mention the tang dynasty where the movie is set. this movie is becoming more and more a western-oriented money-making film than a deep chinese cultural film for me. ugh.

I'm afraid the comment by 'annoyed' is wrong. The costumes and abundance of cleavages shown in the photos are actually very accurate to the style and fashion of the Tang Dynasty. Perhaps the misunderstanding is inevitable simply because in most costume dramas set in this dynasty the costumes are always wrong. One reason why I admire Zhang's last few movies very much is that the styles, colour schemes, themes and sets are all very true to the spirit of the period they are set in. He is one of the very few directors making Chinese period films (other than those set in the Qing Dynasty, which is the most recent therefore not difficult to get right) who gets the 'feel' of the period spot on - regardless of whether the film itself is any good.

Judging from the photos so far, this film looks like it has totally captured the 'Tang' look. The Tang Dynasty is a period in China when it was most prosperous and therefore most extravagant and decadent. Much of its fashion, styles and architectural influences came from India, Persia and other Western nations connected by the Silk Road. If you read Bamber Gascoigne's book about Chinese dynasties you will be shocked by just how liberal the morals and attitudes of China had been in the past - the puritanical attitudes it is famous for is only prevalent due to the situation of the last two dynasties.

There is a good book on Chinese historical costumes called "5000 Years of Chinese Costumes" (probably the only complete book on this subject) available from amazon, if anyone is interested. Some of the gowns seen in these photos are lifted straight out of this authoritative book.

Here is me again, to leave a few words behind, well i think if you are chinese you should be proud your culture looked so decadent and beautiful practically the most extravagant in history, so i wonder if the chinese people will be proud of this film, i mean it is about them, and maybe they will wonder if the westerners will long to be chinese!!!!
