Top 10 Thai Films Box Office 2006 [Part 1]

But It's too difficult for me to show you all of them so I better get start with the film that on the top of Thailand box office. For today let's see which movies are on the top 5.

1. Khan Kluay (ก้านกล้วย)
Distributor: Sahamongkol Film International
Box Office Estimate: 110 million baht
Release Date: 18 May 2006
Genre: Animation/Comedy
Director: Kompin Kemkamnerd

Length: 93 Minute

This year Champion (until October) is Kan-Kluay ,Thailand's first animate feature film, which recieved a lot of praise from critics and viewers all over Thailand. Though it pass the 100 million baht mark but with 3 years of production and the budget of 150 million baht (exclude distribution fee though Sahamongkol Film since Kantana Animation isn't an distributor). The film still loss and the hope of profit depends on home video and international market. There's still no news of their second animate feature.

Cast: Teng Terdtueng, Nong Cha Cha Cha, Isaree Soungcharern, Nikalaya Dhunlaya
Length: 110 Minute

Mum Jok Mok, Teng Terdtueng and Nong Cha Cha Cha are together form the most successful comedian group in Thailand called "Sam Cha". They are so popular that almost all of their films and TV shows are big hit. This movie is a co-finance of Work Point Entertainment,the most popular game show creator in Thailand which own the right of "Sam Cha", and Sahamongkol Film. Although the film didn't recieved good reviews from critics and viewers but it still manage to reach 100 million mark and surely make profit for both company.

3. Seasons Change (เพราะอากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงบ่อย)

Genre: Romantic / Comedy
Director: Nithiwat Tharathorn
Cast: Witawat Singlampong, Chutima Teepanat, Yuwanat Arayanimisakul, Chalermpol Tuntawisut, Ratchu Surachalas
Length: 118 Minute

From 1 of the 6 directors of Fan-Chan (My Girl). This romantic comedy is probably the most lovable movie of Thai moviegoers in 2006 that all 3 new comer lead actor and actress are instantly popular overnight. The film gross is also boosted by the excellent marketing of GTH and the feel good tone of the film itself. Highly recommend!!

FYI, Season Change is the name of a very popular R&B song which tell us to wait for the
bright new day after the strom has pass. The director also use this song in the film.

4. See How They Run (โกยเถอะโยม)

Release Date: 3 August 2006
Genre: Comedy
Director: Jaturong Mok Jok
Cast: Jaturong Mok Jok, Prasitchok “Nong Pee” Manasantatchart, Charoenporn “Kohtee Aramboy” Onlamai
Length: 97 Minute

A low-budget horror comedy which reuse the once popular Thai film formula - no story, no character development just a group of people running away from ghost in a funny way. Jaturong Mok Jok, the director, is a popular comedian with no directing experience but With the help of GTH professional production & marketing team. The result is better than expected and the money is flowing into GTH again.

5. The Memory (รักจัง)
Distributor: RS Films
Box Office Estimate: 52 million baht
Release Date: 1 June 2006
Genre: Romantic / Comedy
Director: Heman Chetamee
Cast: Ratapoom Tokongsab, Paula Taylor, Sompong Kunaprathom
Length: 105 Minute

A romantic comedy which star two of the most popular Thai teen idol, Rattapoom Tokongsub and Paula Taylor. The film release in the heat of summer movies at no.4 but manage to climb to top spot in the 2nd week thanks to the good word of mouth. The final gross should earn some relief back to the troubled RS Film.

Thailand's only a stones throw from Oz, yet we get virtually nothing from there shown here. Tears of the Black Tiger & Ong Bak are the only ones that come to mind that had a general release here.

I love thai films, but I'd love to see more genres of film in the market share. I'm tired of seeing mindless comedies about - well - about nothing at all. I was actually glad Seasons Change was such a huge hit, yes finally a break from that genre!, I was celebrating because for once - a good romantic comedy was made by a Thai studio (after PhuenSanit [Dear Dakanda] of course but I do like SC more) just wanting to see Thai people paying more attention to arthouse/indie films that's all.
