Distribution rights for Minoru Kawasaki's The World Sinks Except Japan (Nihon igai zenbu chinbotsu) are to be offered for sale by KlockWorx Co. Ltd. (K.K. KurokkuWâkusu) at TIFFCOM 2006 in Tokyo. The movie is scheduled to be shown in Screening Room 2 at Academyhills, on the 49th floor, on October 23rd at 12:15 p.m.. It's scheduled to have its European première at the Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) in England on November 10th, and to subsequently be screened there on November 12th. KlockWorx and Tornado Film K.K. (K.K. Torunêdo Firumu) released it theatrically in Japan on September 2nd.

The screenplay for The World Sinks Except Japan (Nihon igai zenbu chinbotsu) was written by Kawasaki and Masakazu Migita, based on the eponymous novella Nihon igai zenbu chinbotsu by Yasutaka Tsutsui - which itself was a parody of the science-fiction books Nippon chinbotsu (ue) and Nippon chinbotsu (shita) by Sakyô Komatsu. (Shinji Higuchi's 2006 movie Sinking of Japan (Nihon chinbotsu) is based on the two books by Komatsu, as was Shirô Moritani's 1973 movie Submersion of Japan (Nippon chinbotsu).) The movie's principal cast is as follows: Kenji Kohashi, Shûji Kashiwabara, Masatoshi Matsuo, Takenori Murano, Hiroshi Fujioka, Mio Dohi, Blake Crawford (Bureiku Kurofôdo), Kira Raichevskaya (Kira Raichebusukaya), Delcea Mihaela Gabriela (Derucha Mihaera Gaburiera), Ricaya Spooner (Rikaya Supunâ), Yôichi Okamura, Ijirî Okada, Shirô Tsubuyaki, Zico Uchiyama (Jîko Uchiyama - PDF file), Takashi Matsuo, Dave Spector (Dêbu Supekutâ), Tsutsui (see above), Arthur Kuroda (Kuroda Âsâ), Hirohisa Nakata, and Minori Terada. It was supervised by Akio Jissôji.

Here's a description of The World Sinks Except Japan from the LIFF website: "What would happen if all the continents in the world sank, leaving only Japan above water? With its tongue stuck firmly in its cheek that's exactly what this film explores. Now the only superpower in the world, Japan is able to dictate the law. English as the global language? Not any more. Whale meat back on the menu? You bet. This is a world where 12.5 million non-Japanese refugees are homeless and Schwarzenegger is reduced to performing tricks in bars for money. This hilarious satire pokes fun at global superpowers, western traditions and foreign immigrants. And remember, it could happen!"

A downloadable version of the trailers would be cool - MOV, AVI, MPG, WMV, whatever. Not all of us live in countries with broadband in every home.

Just watched this tonight. Dreadfully unfunny. And so many missed opportunities for satire, but I'm thinking this kind of spook if beyond Japanese filmmakers. SO they got caucasians who can speak fluent Japanese—a couple who can even act (just)—but they do precious little with them. The filmmakers must have thought that only American celebrity culture would be worth a tweak if the world did indeed sink, since those are the characters who get most of the screen time. Plenty of "foreigner" fear to go around, but all of it so toothless it doesn't garner any laughs. Perhaps if they'd been a little more scathing in their portrayal of Americans—sommething even AMERICANS do better than this—they might have had something. As it is, this is laboured "comedy." I didn't laugh once and, having seen hundreds of Japanese films over the years—including some very funny comedies and satires—I can't imagine Japanese audiences found this particularly compelling either.
