Market share record domestic films
Korea's leading film exhibitor CGV reported a record breaking market share of Korean films last September. Korean films dominated the domestic market with 82.7% of the sold tickets, edging over February 2004's record, when Korean films had a market share of 81.8%.

Two strong performing Korean films were the main contributors to the new record. The Host still attracted a large number of viewers in September and the September release Maundy Thursday also proved to have mass appeal.

Hollywood films only accounted for 5.4% of September's film ticket sales. Japan had a strong blockbuster in September with Sinking of Japan holding top spots for several weeks. Japanese films were responsible for 7.3% of the market.

Korean films have performed very inconsistent during this year, with highs and lows. The year started well and successful titles included The King and the Clown and My Boss, My Teacher. From May Korean big-budget films failed at the box office and some highly anticipated Hollywood films dominated. From July Korean films started to regain control of the box office with the introduction of the traditional line-up of summer horror films, followed by the popular The Host.
