Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon Announced

(Posted In Asia Drama Film News Martial Arts )

ThreeKingdoms.jpgAt the Pusan Film Festival yesterday, a press conference was held to formally announced a new period martial arts epic, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon. Its based on Luo Guanzhong's classic novel series "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", the same source material used for John Woo's upcoming film, The Battle at Red Cliff. Handling the directorial duties will be Daniel Lee of Dragon Squad fame while Sammo Hung will serve as fight choreographer. The cast include Andy Lau, Maggie Q, Leon Lai and Sammo Hung.

"Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon" is a dramatic chronicle of Chinese history from 184 to 280 AD, during which China split into three kingdoms: the Wei, Shu and Wu.

Chinese actor Leon Lai will play Zhou Yu, the chief military commander loyal to founder of the Wu Kingdom, Sun Quan. Sammo Hung will play Zhang Fei, another warrior loyal to Liu Bei, founder of the kingdom of Shu. Maggie Q plays Cao Ying, the granddaughter of the warlord Cao Cao, emperor of the kingdom of Wei.

The $25 million budget film is back by Hong Kong's Visualizer Film and Korea's Taewon Entertainment. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in China next year.

Its "Zhou Yu" not Zhao Yu. Sorry for being pedantic but I happen to be a descendent of the guy and you got his surname wrong. :)

Why are they letting this guy direct another film? And on top of that..how did he secure Leon, Andy and Sammo as actors in this movie? I guess none of them watched Dragon Squad.

I can't completely write off Daniel Lee. Most of his movies that I've seen have been subpar, but I have a soft spot for BLACK MASK and especially TILL DEATH DO US PART. I'll agree he's not the most encouraging choice, though I hope he can deliver something on a level with his handful of good films. Maybe this A-list production will inspire the director to rise to the occasion. I wish Sammo was directing this himself, but we could have done worse than Daniel Lee.

Without a good producer involved, Daniel Lee tends to make mediocre films (Black Mask had Tsui Hark, Til Death Do Us Part and A Fighter's Blues had Derek Yee to back him up).

Excellent point about Tsui and Yee with the "assist" on Lee's better movies.

Never did see A FIGHTER'S BLUES - did it make the jump from unreleased Miramax/Dimension property to unreleased Dragon Dynasty property?

I hope Daniel Lee can capture the novel's essence. It doesn't have to include every detail from it, but honestly, most movies are not as good as the book their influenced from. Stay true to the book and it will do well. Romance of the Three Kingdoms has quite a large number of followers ranging from scholars to video gamers.

I wonder what the film will include for the 3 kingdoms. And why do they have Cao Ying, but no one else except for Zhou and Guan casted? Plus I doubt that wenz person is seriously a descendant of Zhou Yu.
