THE CLASSIC SCI-FI ULTIMATE COLLECTION

(Posted In Cult DVD News Horror Random Geek Talk Reviews Sci-Fi / Fantasy USA and Canada )

scifiultcolldvd.jpgOnly available at Best Buy fans of B monster movies should run not walk to get their copy. This set contains five films for the low price of about $20 US and three of those are undisputed masterpieces of their kind. The Incredible Shrinking Man is presented in it's original aspect ratio but without any extras which is absolutely a crime against humanity. This should be a two disc set at minimum packed with a couple of commentaries and a documentary on directed Jack Arnold. Maybe this is in the offing at some point but until then this title and the fact that the set includes so many others make it basically a must buy.

Tarantula was also directed by Jack Arnold and showcases the directors masterful command of cinematic space. He makes the desert come alive even when there isn’t a giant spider on the horizon. Tarantula is unquestionably the best of the big bug B’s though it takes a back seat to A list feature Them! Don’t let that dissuade you. This is a highly entertaining movie that even features an early Clint Eastwood in a cameo role that you’ll miss if you blink.

The Mole People stinks. It’s awful. Boring, talky but any genre fan will enjoy the appearances of the monsters. Also easy to enjoy is the introduction by the highly recognizable Dr. Frank Baxter who starred in all those great Frank Capra science flicks like Our Mr. Sun and The Great Hemo. Beyond that the movie has some kitsch value but is easily the clunker on the set.

The Monolith Monsters? One of the coolest monster movies you’ve never heard of. Tons of kids rediscovered this little gem back in the early days of Creature Features and never forgot it. It’s a desperate race against time when scientists discover a meteor has brought form of rock that grows to tremendous heights crashes under it’s own weight and fossilizes anyone who comes into contact with it. As the curtain of death marches slowly across the desert floor it threatens to envelope the world.

Last but certainly not least is the Z Grade life of the party Monster On The Campus representing the low point of their f Universal Monster makeup and the high point of begging for MST3K camp. And at one hour and seventeen minutes it would be easy to do a double feature with. Truth be told everything in this set except Mole People deserves a commentary (maybe Joe Bob Briggs could do the comm’s for Mole and Campus) but the smart fan will see the potential in this well packaged immediate gratification
