Brace yourselves for this one, folks, because it doesn't get much odder than this ... while his Hollywood career has been tied up in direct to video hell for years now Belgian action star Jean Claude Van Damme has, in recent days, built a bit of a cottage industry appearing in foreign films. And good on him for doing it. From his appearance in French slacker comedy Narco through to a spot in the most recent live action Asterix, Van Damme has chosen a string of interesting titles and shown a never before hinted at sense of humor, happily playing against stereotype and having a good laugh at his own expense. Even so, I wouldn't have seen this one coming ...
Helmed by Ömer Faruk Sorak, well regarded in these parts thanks to his previous directorial effort G.O.R.A., Sinav is the story of five high school students plotting to steal their university entrance exam booklets. Van Damme plays a major character in the film credited only as "The Thief" and was reportedly so fond of the script that he did the film for free. Not for union scale, folks, for free.
Sinav Website - to hit the trailers select 'A'. The full trailer (Fragman) features Van Damme rather prominently ...
That looks promising. Van Damme needs to get up with Luc Besson while he's shuffling around Europe - he'd be an inspired villain or reluctant ally for Statham in TRANSPORTER 3 and would fit nicely in with that series' pure and beautiful contempt for reality.
Amen to that. Or could you see him as a villain in Banlieue 14, or whatever they end up calling the next Belle / Rafaelli picture? The one thing Banlieue 13 really lacked was a villain who could put up a good fight ...
Love Van Damme!
Unfortunately though, he couldn't do the new Asterix film. He was replaced by someone else.
Yea, he couldn't be in the Asterix movie, becasue he's in intensive training and preperation for his new action movie. He will appear in Istanbul on the 17th, for the premier of Sinav. And in Frankfurt on the 19th of October.
I agree with the suggestion that Van Damme should team up with Besson. I would also love to see him in a HK movie (hey, they took Michael Beihn) or in a surprise bit in a Tony Jaa film. One can dream right?
I dunno--I've thought Van Damme had a sense of humor ever since I saw him fight a giant penguin.
I love Van Damme even though some of his new movies dont compare to the originals. Kick Boxer and Blood Sport are my absolute favourite.
