Trailer Alert: Full trailer for Zack Snyder's '300'

(Posted In Action Continental Europe and Russia Drama Trailer Alert )

300poster.jpgThanks to Richard for the pointer to what is in his words the official trailer for Zack Snyder's movie adpatation of Frank Miller's graphic novel retelling of the story of the Battle of Thermopylae [the story of a story of a story for those of you keeping count at home], 300. We haven't said too much about here. That's understandable. It's easy to hype something up to death [guilty] and then be gravely disappointed by screening time. But color me impressed and intrigued by this one.

Pretty. Emotional. Violent. Nice.

Apple Trailer here.

Sound off. What do you think?

I never read the comic this is based on so consider me surprised that there are friggin Orcs and a rampaging rhino in this. What gives? I was under the impression this would be a stylized but still grounded in reality type story. Now it looks more like some kind of alternate history fantasy thing. I'm not saying that's necessarily bad but it was very weird to watch.

The only thing that bugged me about this is the main guy who tends to scream alot. Even in the poster he's screaming.

It looks gorgeous, but the only thing that bugged me was the hyperactive editing and techno/industrial soundtrack. Makes it look less like a movie, and more like an advertisement for some extreme sports drink.

Hey, if the movie is even half as good as the opening 15 minutes of Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake (mmmm, Johnny Cash opening credits), then well I'm there.

Still looks great. And right on with the opening of DotD, Kurt.

There aren't orcs. The person that looks like an orc is actually a deformed person. The rhino was a weapon that was obtained on an expedition to Africa.

"Sound off" - not only a invitation to Twitch readers to voice their opinions, but also the best way to watch that visually-impressive trailer. That music works about as well as 2Pac music worked in SUPERCOP.

I was wondering why this hadn't been mentioned on twitch yet. From what I've seen of the graphic novel, this is going to be yummy. I'm excited for Snyder's Watchmen too. :)

ps: is that NIN? it sounds sooooo familiar.

» Posted by Lola at October 5, 2006 01:07 PM

Rhythm-X: LOL... single tear.

» Posted by Mack at October 5, 2006 01:51 PM

It's looking pretty interesting.

I'd be much happier if noone ever got a Watchmen movie off the ground, though.

@Lola
It's Nine Inch Nails - Just Like You Imagined from the Fragile Album.

» Posted by SneakerPimp at October 5, 2006 03:20 PM

it's NIN: Just Like You Imagined from "The Fragile" DoubleLP.
yes, it's only temp-tracked. actual movie will have "normal"
score. meaning: shitty, old, uninventive orchestra-pieces.

i agree, especially in the "leaked web-trailer" before, leonidas (gerald butler) is screaming way too much. well, let's wait for
the movie (R-rated, I hope) and hope for some story & good dialogue.
ah, and the action uses this horrible stop/start/slow/quick technique.....mediocre in my opinion.
I want undoctored wide-angle non-stop takes. no fkn mtv-cuts.

Comics was pretty good, lots and lots of gory stuff in it.

My complaint is that Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire would have been FAR better source material (not to mention respectful of a battle that had an incredible impact on Western Civilization just as it was being born). That being said...I actually like the temp track there. Call me weird but considering I enjoy opera and classical regularly I think people hate on electronic music FAR too much. Yes there's A LOT of crap but not everything is.

Is that Gerald Butler? Shiiiit that mofo asked my girlfriend to come with him up to his hotel room a few weeks ago. probably needed someone to hold him after the Beowulf and Grendel premier.

I have no beef whatsoever with electronic music - used well. But Nine Inch Nails (never a personal favorite to begin with) used to advertise a movie about, as it's so eloquently put in the trailer, SPAAAARRRRRTTAAAAAAAANNNNSSSSSSS, doesn't work for me at all. This doesn't mean they need to get, say, James Horner to come in and plagarize his BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS score yet again - but let's not dismiss all symphonic music as "shitty, old, uninventive orchestra-pieces", because that's as ignorant and untrue as saying that all electronic musicians are hacks not talented enough to master real instruments. It's what you do with the tools at your disposal that matters, be it a Casiotone or a full symphony orchestra.

Plenty of artists from Yoko Kanno (who at one point took a string section and combined it with the sound of a dial-up modem) to Frank Zappa (whose orchestral works are considered to be so complex as to be nearly unplayable by mortals) have worked in both orchestral and electronic music, and one form is not inherently superior to the other.

They should ask Reznor to do a score for this as a "bonus" audio track for the DVD at least. Screaming sweaty men usually work better with lots of guitar riffs.

Looks amazing. I believe the cinematic style to be a fantastic contrast to Miller's expresionistic(?) minimilistic black and white pen and ink work. I will find this far more entertaining than the Sin City film most likely due to this fact.
And in regards to the music in the trailer-I think it works well. Looks like an MTV video and has me(well out of the MTV demographics) looking forward to seeing it.

so what is everyone's opinions of "mashing genres" in a sense with movies and music? this maybe completely off topic, but i'm still yanking chunks of hair out when i saw the marie antoinette trailer featuring 80s pop. um. let me know if this post is dumb. but i'm really wondering if my disdain of that mash up is going to cloud my appreciation for the movie as a work of art (or some bull i was once fed by a movie snob).

» Posted by Lola at October 6, 2006 12:51 PM

Visually: amazing. Originality/interest factor to me: so-so. All the shouting of Spartans!! Yeah I agree - the lead actor in the trailers doesn't cut it for me. This seems like Spartacus meets Gladiator by way of Sin City. But is there any steak to go with the sizzle. Having said all that I actually had fun watching the Dawn sequel, which was a lot of sizzle and not much steak!

Kept waiting for Neo from the Matrix to come out with all of the stop action camera work.
