Foreign Language Oscar Submissions

(Posted In Asia Continental Europe and Russia Mexico and South America Random Geek Talk UK / Ireland / Australia / New Zealand USA and Canada )

bornonesheetenskasmall.jpgOf all the awards given out at Hollywoods big back-patting pageant, the two more interesting ones are for the best original screenplay and best foreign language film. Things are a while off for the former. For the latter, due to the number and nature of all submissions and complexity of the submission rules, the deadline for countries to submit their eligible film was October 2, 2006. I haven't seen the official big list, but most of them are out there at this point.

There are some very large-scale films nominated this year, mainly from Asia, including King and the Clown, The Banquet, Curse of the Golden Flower, but also Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth and Fyodr Bondarchuk's The Ninth Company. My guess would be the battle of the Spanish language films Pan's vs. Volver, but I never call this award correctly.

Below is the nearly complete list of submitted films.

Huh im sorry maybe im geographically incompetent, but isn't Hong Kong in China? So China is sending in 2 movies?

Anywho, lots of Dutch people say Zwartbook has a good chance. But we'll see.

Polish movie title shall be "Z odzysku" separately. These are two words.

Ling Ling - Fixed, when I cut and pasted the title, I assumed a formatting error...now I feel so provincial...

As to the Hong Kong + China = 2 submissions for one country: Do not even begin to try to understand the byzantine rules and regulations (although I'm sure there is a wikipedia entry on the subject) of the Foreign Language Film submission process. Your head will hurt afterwards.

I'd love to see Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Invisible Waves make the nominations.

Swedens nomination is Farväl Falkenberg (Falkenberg Farewell),

Also announced as official:

Argentina - Family Law
Bangladesh - Nirontor
Bulgaria - Monkeys in Winter
Croatia - Libertas
Indonesia - Love for Share
Iran - Café Transit
Iraq - Half Moon
Kyrgyzstan - The Wedding Chest
Morocco - Moroccan Symphony
Puerto Rico - Thieves and Liars
Serbia - Tomorrow Morning
Taiwan - Blue Cha-Cha

Official list should be out in about two weeks. Some countries just send their movies without making a public announcement; others get disqualified.

Oscar Foreign Film board generally has shown that they hate Asian movies....China has the best chance from the region, but I see Germany as the eventual winner.

Five Star wouldn't let Thailand submit Invisible Waves (likely because there's hardly any Thai spoken in it), so the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand is going with Ahimsa ... Stop to Run.

I'm from Brazil, Movies aspirins and vultures is a nice submision, not a huge hit here in Brazil. Thats why I was so suprised with the submision. The Brazilian movie agency normaly submit movies with major box ofice.
Still, M.A.V. is a good movie, somehow diferent from recent Brazilian productions.

About Hong Kong, they still have some independence over china in some aspects.

ALso HK movies are in cantonese and chinese are in mandarin. I guess....

Volver is an early favorite. Asian films are A list movies. The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros and The curse of the Golden Flowers are both good movies.
