yo-yo_cannes.jpgOh joy. Chicks in school uniforms kicking ass and swinging yo-yos with lethal accuracy! Yo-Yo Girl Cop bliss!

Mark Schilling of The Japan Times hands out the first English review of the latest installment in the Sukeban Deka franchise by director Fukasaku Kenta and he's fairly positive about it.

Sounds and looks really cool.

Unfortunately, Toei hasn't been including English subtitles lately on their Japanese releases. Hopefully Sukeban Deka gets licensed quickly. Or is Toei directly releasing movies in some foreign markets now? I noticed a Region 1 DVD of Battle Royale Directors Cut in stock over at Amazon.com that supposedly was released by Toei. The cover art is different than any other version I've seen. I thought that it wasn't supposed to be available in the US. Might pick that version up, since I've only got the regular HK disc and I'd like to see the Director's Cut.

In addition to Sukeban Deka I'm also waiting for Toei's live-action She The Ultimate Weapon (SaiKano) with Aki Maeda to get subs too. Both movies have anime tie-ins too so I'm pretty sure that they'll eventually get released in the US.

We need more action movies available in the US with cute Japanese chicks kicking butt!

Re: that Battle Royale that Amazon's selling--it's a bootleg. A really great bootleg with great picture and sound and proper subtitling throughout, including the extras (and there's a ton of extrasm but a total bootleg nonetheless. I don't know how they're getting away with it.

Here's a review of the R4 Battle Royale Director's Cut that looks suspiciously similar to the one being sold by Amazon. The author writes that the image quality is not the best.

Mark Schilling's review is right on the mark...Sukeban Deka is definitely a fun, popcorn film and probably the best of the Sukeban Deka movies. I hope that there's a sequel in the works.

I didn't realize there was a live-action movie of "Saikano". It must not have been that great as it seems to have just come and gone in Japan (1/28/06 Road Show) and there's already a DVD out (released 6/21/06). Was this covered by Twitch somewhere?

Here's the URL to the movie's official website:
