First Teaser For Cho Dong-Oh's The Restless

(Posted In Asia Film News Martial Arts Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

restlessposter.jpgCho Dong-Oh's The Restless is a hotly anticipated title 'round these parts, reuniting many of the key staff behind the fantastic Musa: The Warrior while also adding technical staff that have worked with the likes of Akira Kurosawa and Zhang Yimou. Toede over in the KFC forums has uncovered the first teaser for the film and you can color me impressed.

A fantasy based melodramatic wuxia (is there any other kind, really?) set in the limbo between death and reincarnation The Restless aims for a high art approach to the swordplay that Korea has really only gotten right once to my knowledge while also working in fantasy elements that nobody there has ever really done particularly well. Well, fortunately, the one film that got the swordplay right is the aforementioned Musa and based on this it looks like they've got the fantasy part down, too. To everybody wondering whether there are people flying around in here the answer is yes, but considering the film is after all populated almost entirely with ghosts it seems unfair to complain about that. The big selling point to these eyes are the kill effects, bodies erupting into a gushing stream of flowers as the blade passes through them. Even in the crappy Flash encoding it's just beautiful stuff.

Is this just a rip-off of the Japanese Movie Shinobi, characters look alike (the white haired guy, the main character, a dead ringer for the main guy from Shinobi), the action looks alike (the ninja style guys that jump on the roof, the guy swinging through the trees with his hair?).

damn that looks really really good

No, this has got nothing to do with Shinobi at all. The white haired guy is a very common archetype in wuxia legends, the white hair indicating some sort of supernatural power that makes him old and young at the same time. And the lead guy in this (also the lead guy in Musa) looks nothing at all like Jo Odagiri.

Shinobi is a reworking of Romeo and Juliet with ninjas. This is a romance that involves someone travelling to the underworld to rescue their lover. If anything it's a buddhist reworking of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

Got to love idiots who love to open their mouth with nothing going on between their ears.

Yeah, like Shinobi was truely an original film.

Dear me, looks rather good!

As for it looking like Shinobi... I see no similarities to it whatsoever.

This looks a lot better than Shinobi. Can't wait to see a high quality version of this trailer.

That's just amazing. I did not expect it to look that good.

I need a HQ version of this teaser.
