I'm not aware if any of the Twitch folks covering this years Toronto International Film Festival managed to catch this one. There isn't a review on the site at the moment. It was one I wanted to catch, but like most things at TIFF, scheduling problems and too many other choices did not allow it. Paul Verhoeven's first Dutch-made film in 23 years generated a fair number of positive comments from folks I spoke with, although in several mainstream media corners, it was perhaps a bit less well received. Nonetheless, Sony Pictures Classics has picked the film up for North American distribution. No indication of a release date yet, but this is a big glossy motion picture (facetiously labelled Schindler's List meets Showgirls by the films detractors) so expect it to play most of the big citiies in the US and Canada at the very least. Also, the film is the Netherlands official selection for the 'Best Foreign Language Film' Academy Award.

I've seen it this week. It was released in the Netherlands one week ago and broke a bunch of records I think. My expectations were lowered a bit because of a mediocre review I read in the newspaper, but I thought it was a pretty good film. Schindler's List meets Showgirls? Hehe well, it's a WWII film and there's nudity, but that's about where the comparison ends I think.
Oh, yes, I was assuming that that comment was indeed a facile one. "Pretty Good" rather than "Fantastically Great" makes me feel better for choosing "Prague" instead at the TIFF which turned out to be one of the best films I caught there. Still I'm glad that Sony will release this on the big screen, which is the only way to catch a Verhoeven film.
Nice legs. :)
I caught it and found it an enormously entertaining film. Glad that the North American rights are finallly sold.
