Hokkabaz (The Conjurer): The Latest From Cem Yilmaz of GORA

Big thanks to Zehirsiz for steering us to the website for Hokkabaz the latest film to star enormously popular Turkish comedian Cem Yilmaz. Yilmaz is best known around these parts for his big budget sci-fi spoof GORA but he is a huge star - and a multi faceted one - in his native Turkey and here gets a co-director credit as well as the starring role.

Hokkabaz revoleves around Yilmaz who plays a small time stage magician who is fired from his job and goes on tour around Turkey accompanied by his best friend and unstable father. It looks to be a beautifully shot piece of work - though almost entirely overlooked in the west Turkey has a very well developed film industry - and while it was impossible not to see an awful lot of Mel Brooks influence on GORA this one see Yilmaz in a much more restrained mode that I think plays a fair bit better.
