If you're a filmgoer in Bogota, Colombia, you might be so entranced by Uma Thurman's blonde locks and long legs that you'll want to see the newly-opened Mi super ex novia (AKA My Super Ex-Girlfriend). But to paraphrase Nicolas Cage in The Wicker Man: "Step. Away. From. The. American. Movie."
Instead, why not see Dos hermanas (AKA A Tale of Two Sisters), which is evidently playing all over town, and is a modern classic, according to Todd. I'm not on board completely with the "classic" tag, but it is extremely well-made and very thought-provoking, and may very well cause you and your girlfriend to break up. In which case you can go ahead and see Mi super ex novia.
If you haven't broken up yet, check out Brazilian comedy El casamiento de Romeo y Julieta (AKA The Marriage of Romeu and Julieta), in which a couple fall in love despite being ardent fans of two rival futbol teams.
Bruno Barreto directed; he last helmed the disastrous View From the Top, but made his initial mark with Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. Despite its limited exposure, and judging solely by the trailer, this could be worth a look. And, hey, three IMDB readers left positive comments, so it can't be all bad.
Trailer (Embedded Quicktime)
This movie is awful. Most of recent romantic comedies made here in Brasil are just bad.
Thanks, fel, for that 'on the scene' report. Disappointing, but not surprising, I suppose. So, what recent films made in Brasil have you liked?
