Films For The Impatient: Tideland and Blood Trails Hit Russian DVD

(Posted In DVD News )

tideland-poster2.jpgOkay all you impatient Gilliam fans, I've just gotten a look at the Russian release of Tideland and it's a good news, bad news scenario. The good news is that the transfer is good, clear and anamorphic. The bad news is that like many Russian DVDs of western films it insists on there being at least one Russian option present when viewing the film. You can watch it dubbed with no subtitles or in English with Russian subtitles, but there is no way of watching it in English with no subtitles.

The also recently released Russian DVD of Robert Krause's Blood Trails fares better, with a pristine transfer and a clean English option.

So ... if you've been anxious for these, you have options.

A lot of cool stuff hitting Russian DVD before they hit elsewhere, except most seem to be Fullscreen (BOOOOO), and some only have Russian dubs.

That's really unfortunate...for us.

Dude, you can easily remove the subtitles from the TIDELAND disc by using a little well known free software called DVDShrink. Just uncheck the subtitle file when ripping it to your HD. Then you can either watch it from there or burn yourself a subtitle-free copy. So long as you only do it for your own use it should even be legal.

Yeah, but the DVD's still FULLSCREEN.

Waiting on a better release...

There's something weird with the ratio on the Tideland one ... when I played it on my computer (which has a 16:9 screen and automatically adjusts for ratio) it played in the proper format, but when I tried to get screen captures it gave them with the full width of the picture, but compressed down to 4:3 ... I've never seen it before ...
