FLCL Ultimate Edition, R1 USA DVD November 21st 2006.

ultimateFLCL.jpegNot one to really recommend the old double-dips, have enough on my plate watching films I've never seen before to get too fickle about slight improvements and unnecessary extras, but here's a release just announced (well, the date is set now, we've know of this as 'coming soon' for a while) for a new set of 'Fooly Cooly' (aka 'FLCL') by Production I.G / Gainax / Starchild. Yes, this has grown in reputation for its oddness, and the original R1 DVDs have been hard to track down, expensive too if I remember, so this new set will allow everyone to have their chance with this.

If you check around online this series is one of the key pieces of nice animation, thoroughly wacked-out and seriously deranged anime shows in recent memory. Generally, if you're a fan of animation there's a good chance your familiar enough to not even be reading this, and you'll instead be making a note of the release date - if you're new to anime, like animation but generally despise anime, of just like something totally different, then this comes highly recommended as a blind-buy. Must see. [Source : Anime On DVD].

I've been waiting for this to come out for a few years now and now that it is coming out, I'm a little disapointed with what this so-called "ultimate edition" has to offer.
There aren't that many interesting extras, the included book seems quite useless and what's with the t-shirt that you get after mailing some card? No value for those importing this set (not that I would ever consider wearing a tacky anime t-shirt..).
Nope.. don't think I'll be double dipping on this one, the old R4 set is adequate enough for me. I wish they had thrown out those stickers, postcards and t-shirt thingies and included a storyboard / art of-book as well as the sountracks and it would have been a much better set overall - the new Patlabor CE sets are a great example of what kind of extras give some value for your money - at least a lot more than a handful of stickers and postcards! As it stands, the most interesting extra in the FLCL set seems to be the test type dvd which was included with the recent Japanese re-release, can't remember what's on it though.

Oh, and don't mistake my rant for criticism on the show; on the contrary, this OVA series is more or less brilliant and very worth checking out - no doubt this set is the best bet for those in the US.

The original releases came out on three seperate DVD's with only two half hour episodes per DVD. To buy the whole series, you would have to spend around $95.00. I love the show, but not that much. I'm really hoping the price is right this time around.

I don't like a lot of the anime coming out nowadays, but I loved this. It and Cowboy Bebop are my favorites.

I never got around to buying it, so I'll definitely be getting this.
