'Sha Po Lang II' : The Prequel Is Coming.

(Posted In Action Asia Drama Martial Arts Random Geek Talk Thriller )

SPLposter.jpegOriginally it was thought that Donnie Yen's 'Po Jun' was effectively the 'SPL' sequel, but infact it's a separate film and we have details now that say 'SPL II' is a separate film, a prequel, to be "less brutal but more exciting" as monkeypeaches puts it : this is to deal with Mainland Chinese issues to do with some of those astonishing hard scenes in the original.

I would also take a guess this could be a sign of the shifting balance from the nice minimalist use of action to a more tradition Action Movie approach, but there you go - it's just that, a guess, and I would say also that a lot of things will probably stay pretty much the same. It was a good film, after all. [Source : Monkey Peaches].

Last year i had watched SPL and it was great and violent. But unfortuntely, why is Sammo Hung turn to be bad guy for this show? Well i think they want us guess whether Sammo Hung is good in acted bad guy since Sammo Hung had been filming thousand of martial arts show and he is good guy in 1970s. Well i hope Donnie Yen will do better than SPL last year and also one thing, Donnie Yen will be planing to film Seven Sword 2 for this month or next year i think. Well that's all for now. Good luck Donnie Yen!! And also my fans around the world.

Damn, less martial arts fights. I was hoping this at least would have a little bit more action than s.p.l.

thats not what it says, it says more fights but less brutal.

» Posted by logboy at September 1, 2006 09:53 AM

Yeah, but that was one of the things that made the first one good.

A bit more info here:

On Aug 29, Paco Wong arranged for Wu Jing, who has just wrapped up Let's Steal Together, to go to Hong Kong to meet the press and talk about future plans. Paco Wong declared that they'd be filming SPL 2 next year, sometime after the Lunar New Year. Wu Jing, Sammo Hung and Simon Yam has already signed on to this project. Paco Wong revealed that SPL 2 is a prequel to the original movie, mainly dealing with the relationships between Sammo Hung, Simon Yam and Wu Jing. And in order for it to be approved for release in China, they'd try to accommodate the film regulations of Mainland, reducing some gore. They'd also increase the proportion of fight scenes to keep it thrilling. It's possible that SPL 2 will pit Wu Jing against a number of foreign martial artists, one of whom might possibly be Tony Jaa.

While SPL 2 is still in pre-production, Wu Jing has his own views of the film's plot, "I feel that the prequel should describe how I turn into a cold-blooded killer, why would I carry out a series of murders on Father's Day, why I'd regard Sammo Hung as my father..."

All I can say is I love the original and I hope the prequel will have more fights but maintain a good story. Whether or not it's more brutal or less doesn't matter to me as long as it's well done. Donnie Yen knows what he doing and if anyone else says otherwise then their full of it.

Monkeypeaches has reported wrongly, wujing article has already said that the prequel will only star Sammo, Simon and Wujing which is produced by Paco wong's Gold Label, the Donnie yen one is from Mandarin film, they are different movies.

dammit, all this talk about SPL 2 is making me anxious. When the hell is Wu Jing's Underground Fist (with Andy On and Ronald Cheng) gonna be released?

I hope it's clear that Donnie is not going to be involved with this film. I don't know who'll be doing the choreography, but it won't be Donnie. I think that's really going to effect everything, since he purposely took Wu Jing out of the wushu-style and made him fight differently. Yip isn't involved in this either, so the look will be totally different from SPL as well.

And Po Jun is slated to start filming some time this month, maybe towards the end of September from last indications, with Yip and Yen. No word on the 'bad guys' casting yet.

This 'SPL 2' might be worth a watch for Sammo, but I think the missing edge and creativity of the Yip/Yen mix is going to make it look pale compared to SPL.
