The picture on the left is real, and is showing at the Play.com listing too, and it's for the Standard Edition of Park Chan-Wook's 'Vengeance Trilogy Boxset' that the UK is the first to currently have with English Subtitles. Besides that, there's a picture said to be the Deluxe Set which is also showing at Play.com, which matches the announced details of it being based upon the 'Ultimate' set for 'Oldboy' as used in Korea.
Then you have the only small picture I've seen (at DVDAsian.com) for the R1 USA DVD of 'Rampo Noir' - predictably naff and intentionally off the mark - which is covered in blood splats; shame on them... one of the great films experiences so far this year, and certainly easily classed as horror, it's not quite that simple to say the least - HK Disc of 'Rampo Noir' is very decent indeed, and it's out now, cheap too.
Whilst were here, anyone noticed 'Boogiepop Phantom' is getting a nice cheap R1 set soon? Any good? Always hear that it is...? Also, the first R2 UK DVD for 'Doctor Who' spin-off 'Torchwood' is now showing in pre-order listings for November '06 - and the TV show hasn't even started advertising yet, let alone broadcasting.
Also, in time for the usual UK market for original comedy material on video (well, DVD now) there's the 'Little Britain : Live' DVD in mid-November (which is filmed on the current tour which ends around then...apparently they got a £2m advance on sales of this, there's also an American Remake of the show in the pipeline), and Rob Brydon has a 'Keith Barret : Live' R2 UK DVD for later that month too - great character creation.
All these are nice, in their own way, and the 'Vengeance Trilogy' Boxset is now said to contain remastered 2-Disc Editions of each of the films... so hold off because the transfers I think. All these things will be in the 'DVD Release Calendar' we have here, won't they G.J?!
Oh, and there's an early look at Media Blasters R1 USA DVD of 'The Great Yokai War' at 10kBullets, and that 'SPL / Killzone' R1 USA DVD Review by Grady Hendrix at Kaiju Shakedown.
HOLY SHIT that R1 "Rampo Noir" artwork sucks! Seriously, what in the name of all that is holy and good were they thinking??? Yeah, I'll keep my R2 and ask someone on the internets to just send me the subtitle file for it. Jeez.
BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM, the anime series at least, is quite fascinating and good if you like mindfuck shows. It's just a shame that the US release was based on this slightly censored TV version and not the uncensored Japanese home video release. No big deal but a few of the murder scenes are in black and white instead of in full color.
It is amazing - RAMPO NOIR has to feature some of the most stunning images of any horror in recent memory, and that's the best they could do?
I used to own the Boogiepop Phantom series on dvd until I sold it on Ebay. Please stay away from this series. It is only good if your on LSD and I doubt you will be. So many good reviews for such a boring anime. No more boring animes, PLEASE!!!
though i didnt right a review for 'rampo noir' (i think...) the film is certainly massively impressive, great range of stories and styles that work well together, one of the nicest i've seen this year... shame about the treatment its getting, the fact its been largely ignored, and that its taken so long for an american company to get to work on it...
Actually RAMPO NOIR came out on DVD in Japan just a few months ago (May to be exact) and as such the R1 release is coming extremely quickly. Shame about the cover art though. It certainly won't get any curious shoppers to pick it up.
yes i know there was an unsubbed 'rampo noir' in japan - i did one of those appeals to appeal for subs 'subtitle this' posts on it - what i am more concerned about, other that the continuous bad cover designs and misrepresentation it is part of, is that many films are getting ignored by the fan community : this is one of the best of the year and its simply drifting by... the HK DVD is great, infact theyre so great these days I wonder if theres not some subtle viral marketing being attempted to deny the quality of them and plant the seed of doubt into the minds of people aware of past quibbles with HK discs... conspiracy theories aside, stunning film, HK DVD is a cracker, its cheap and its subtitled and out there now. with the original artwork largely intact.
