It was rumoured that George Romero was going to make a direct follow on to Land of the Dead as his next zombie picture (previous Twitch Article here) in August 2006. But nothing has seemed to come out of that. Instead some new information on a independant production, "Diary of the Dead" which follows a young film crew making a horror film out in the woods, after the zombies start coming, their horror film morphs into a zombie documentary . Sound like Blair Witch? Well, rest assured, if this goes forward Romero will be capturing the spirit of the times, and the prevalent do-it-yourself media post-20th century.
"It has my sensibility, my sense of socioeconomic satire," Romero told the Hollywood Reporter. "And it has my zombies! They're not rushing around - they're gonna be moving slow."
Shooting is scheduled to begin in October in Toronto, Canada.

I'm not going to "rest assured". Land Of The Dead was a complete travesty on every level.
LAND OF THE DEAD was mostly awesome except for a scene or two when it got too cute with the social commentary. I am less than enthused to see Romero climb onto the already rusted post-modern mockumentary bandwagon, though. Hey, George, it's at least 5 years too late for that shit. Don't waste your time.
Diamond Dead, please. With Romero directing, please. With a few minor rewrites to the scipt, please. Thank you.
DIAMOND DEAD sounded just as disastrous as this DIARY OF THE DEAD. Hopefully neither will ever make it into production. Considering how many films Romero gets attached to these days (FROM A BUICK EIGHT and SOLITARY ISLE were also announced as future directing gigs for him in recent weeks) that's actually quite likely.
HBO justs needs to make a series based on The Walking Dead comic. They have a knack for hiring great writers and actors. This is the best zombie story out right now and would kick ass as a series.
While Land of the Dead was certainly a let-down for many, I certainly do not think a modestly budgeted verite-style zombie film would be a bitter pill. I think it could be done damn fine, as long as some restraint is practiced.
I agree wholeheartedly with the HBO Walking Dead series!
This has been on my mind since I read the very first arc. It could be so god damn good!
This DIARY OF THE DEAD could have potential. I thought LAND OF THE DEAD was a mixture of horrible acting, beautiful gore, and some actually well thought out social commentary. DIARY could be pretty swell. I believe in the man, what can I say?
Regarding Romero's upcoming film. It has been done already by director Mike Bartlett and Keving Gates and has been two years in the making. It will be screened on October 28th 2006. The Zombie Diaries website is available to view aswell as the trailer. I play Anna Mckenzie in this feature film.
Take a peek at the trailer....

As a huge fan of the zombie genre since childhood I had awaited another Romero movie since the 80's . Along comes Land of the Dead which was the worst zombie movie I had ever seen (probably worst movie of any type , ever ).....What was he thinking ? It took him all those years to come up with that crap ? Terrible .... The directors cut has commentary by Romero in which he goes on and on about how this was a great film ....Was he watching the same thing I was ?
Although he may be the father of zombie films , I belive that he is now just trying to "cash in" (I mean come on , land of the dead didnt even make sense in a million ways which I wont even bother to get into ... Suffice it to say , the script the acting the story and the idea showed a complete lack of care from Mr. Romero) and he wont get my $10.00 this time.
I'll tell you what, children. You will never find a more devoted Romero fan than me. I have been there since the beginning when you had to drive over fifty miles just to find a theater that would show Night of the Living Dead. This man has managed to make independant movies in a movie world where you are doomed before you begin, and he has done very well. Whether you actually liked the last one or like the next one is of little matter to anyone but you. But if any one of you griping little piss ants think you can pull off something better, by all means have at it. Otherwise, put on a color other than black, put down the doritos and go try to find a life worth living. The real joke is, you twinks are the zombies.
ok, whoa there Bill. Ease up on the Block Capitals. We like that you have an opinion, we don't like that it is 'shouted at full text volume' around here. We actually consider that rude. (And do you have to use so many cuss words?)
Good day.
For all those who consider Land of the Dead to be such a horrible zombie film, you've obviously haven't been exposed to many. Yes the social commentary was a little overt and obvious and yes some of the acting was scetchy, but by no means was this a terrible movie. Compared to about 75% of the zombie and horror films out there, this was another great film from George, even when compared to his other masterpieces. I have complete faith that this Diary film will be another great film, especially since it will be void of production notes and executive tinkering which was ever present in Land....
Land of the Dead, while not as bad as some (including myself) have said, definitely was a let-down. The biggest part of this let down is the fact that it took about twenty years from Day to Land, and after such a long time you almost can't help but be let down. However, there are a couple of things that really bothered me.
First off, they are still using greenback dollars! There is one percent of the population left, and 5000 banks across the country stuffed with money; the economy of Fiddler's Green should have collapsed long ago.
Also, for those who are as anal as I am, in the intro to LAND they say that the dead survive by eating the living which is simply ridiculous by any stretch of the imagination. First, in Day, Doctor Frankenstein shows that the dead derive no nurishment from eating anything, and second, when the dead preist bites the bullfighter-commando in Land the zombie's head is attached only by the spinal cord and the esophagus is completely severed.
Anyways, thanks for putting up with me.
Oh, by the way, I love Romero but he did NOT invent this genre, Vincent Price in Last Man On Earth was released four years before Night of the Living Dead.
Why read this idiot's opinion? He can't even spell independent, let alone understand the trials of one of the FIRST true indie filmmakers... long live George
Everyone has something diffrent to say either against or in defense of "Land of the Dead" the thing is the die hards LOVE what he does bringing a life to the undead is Romero's gift and whether the flick bombed out or not doesn't matter Romero did what he wanted to do and for that he should at least be respected and not blasted. If you don't enjoy his film fine but still props should be given for what he bring to the zombie genre. He is a true master to his craft and forever will be a ledgend. All his works deserve to be seen and they should all be loved for his brilliance.I'm not saying that no one should be allowed to say it sucked but at the same time there is a bigger picture to be seen.Romero is to zombie movies as John Woo is to action films entreupenuers in the industry that alone calls for respect.
I'll stick with George till the end. I love all his movies. I'm soo glad he's going to make a NEW zombie flim. Its good HE'S back making a zombie flim than all those people that are remaking his classics and RUINING them! I heard about the remake of Day that's to be coming out real soon. I was shocked that they're getting Nick Cannon to play the part of Miguel Salazar. Wow...that's a shocker..Well that's all I gotta say. WE LOVE YOU GEORGE! Keep on truckin!
~bailey~
a new romero film? that's good news...but the concept sounds like one them direct to videos films...as long as he wrote the script, right?
Land was a big let down, the younger generation didn't notice that much as they maybe never followed the trilogy WELL. I think romero in his heart thought Land was a let down to, though he could never admit it if you want to market your product and it wasn't all his fualt as much as the corporation tinkering with his movie and basically f@#king up the movie. Thats why i believe he started this project so fast. 1) His movie land didn't come out like he wanted it to be. 2) This the fastest he has ever done 2nd dead flick even though this is no sequel look at how many years usually before he makes another 3) H e is going totally independent which means it will be done HIS WAY. 4) George is getting old and he knows if he wants to put a movie that HE feels fitting of his dream he must do it fast. For thos who nay say going indepedent route are the youngins as his very first "night of the living dead" was independent and to this day is recorded as one of the lowest budgeted movies with a big box office return (kinda like blairwitch in that aspect) so don't nay say over how much money is involved. Fredom of artistic ability is much better than a 30 million dollar budget with someone looking over your shoulder.
Yeah, Land of the Dead kicks ass, sure
Land of the Dead wasn't a travesty. It was just Bad. Day of the Dead was Shit. It was sickening. I was rooting for the Zombies and not in the fun way. Land of the dead was ok. The ending was just shity. if they had reworked the ending it could have been ok. It was just... bad. Not ok, no good, just bad.
From the moment Land of the Dead started I had a sinking feeling. The credits were better in the dawn remake (The only thing better)the zombies reminded me of the Ford motor car ride at the 1960 something world's fair. Yes I'm that old. And roaring zombies No. I was not happy. I love Romero I love the trilogy to pieces. What did I like. I loved the zombie who stumbles out of the liquor store. Old school. I LOVED the zombies in the woods when they stop. I liked the hero guy. But the mythology was missing. No discussion about the zombies. Oh and when blades shows up he looked like a monster from Buffy. Why was he super strong? So we know it's a special appearance? But I think the studio bothered Romero like the cowboy dwarf in the film. Business, lets get this done and boom. Anyway I cant way for Diary of the Dead, I mean cant wait...Romero is like Dylan. How many times was he counted out and then boom. I'm excited.
Land lived up to Romero's legacy in every possible way, despite what young fanboys may say these days. I realize all the cool kids want running zombies, fast cuts, boobies, explosions, and all the stuff that sells tickets...but Romero provides so much more. He tells a story that makes you think while simultaneously scaring the ever-loving hell out of you.
Long live Romero (pun intended), can't wait for his next masterpiece.
I for one am stoked for Dairy, it's by Romero in Romero style. Not dictated by the big studios. I just hope it hurries into theaters!!
Land of the dead was a bit of a disappointment, but I still enjoyed it, at least the zombies were not running faster then the average person can in it!! That's not to say I didn't love the remake of Dawn, I did. It was a long time since a good zombie flick hit the bigscreen, and Dawn was the perfect hit. I hope Diary is just as pleasing, while retaining the original Romero style and orignal zombie stereotype. LLTK!!
The original Dawn of the Dead was George A Romero's Masterpiece. Night was a great film as well. But it will be hard to ever come up with something that can rival the original Dawn or Night. land and day were mediocre at best. I would really love to see him pull out all the stops and go out with a bang however on this new film. Its true he is getting up there in age and will not be around forever. The remake of dawn was ok, but did not stay with the original Romero world, too bad as it could have been fantastic. would love to see more grit and grime and some pure old " their coming to get you barbara" I hope he pulls it off. He is the master after all of the genre. and the original dawn of the dead has to be the greatest Zombie movie of all time. heres to the future master piece by GAR.
Running zombies just doesn't go down well at all, right from the original films zombies have always walked. Zombies running, makes em look like they can copy humans and they shouldn't because they're dead and dumb and look good tearing chunks out of people. From what i've read so far the new one should be very good, can't wait.....
I thoroughly enjoyed the Dawn remake and it's running zombies. I find nothing wrong with walking zombies, it's just all the stupid people in the movie. I find it hard to believe that a military base can fall with little resistance to the zombies. Also, when the zombies break into Fiddler's Green, how do they manage to run down all of the inhabitants if they can merely walk? From a realistic point of view it just seems wrong that there was little resistance to the slow mass of undead. I believe it would be better if either the zombies moved faster, or if they had something going for them a tactic etc. which allowed them to easily run down humans as they did. I would find it a little more believable this way.
In my opinion, if a zombie feels no pain has no need for sustenance, and has unlimited stamina why can't he run? Also the decomposition of the body would inhibit movement, and cause a zombie to move slower, but what is the difference between a healthy person and that same person dead and reanimated besides the loss of life and zombification? Also a lack of intelligence does nothing to diminish an organisms physical aspects. Even the dumbest animals can move their body. So unless the zombies have some sort of mental or developmental diaorder, which would be impossible as the brain is dead, and a zombie cannot develop, why can't they run? Think about it.
