French website Cinempire have gotten their hands on a stack of stills from the upcoming live action adaptation of popular anime Mushishi by Akira director Katsuhiro Otomo and starring Jo Odagiri in the lead role.
Having seen the first ten or so episodes of this I'm quite curious how Otomo is going to adapt it to feature length. It's a very down tempo show about a man who wanders around Japan capturing mushi - strange, almost protozoan supernatural creatures - and curing different illnesses that they can cause. The still sanswer at least some of the questions, with a decent number of familiar characters in there. At the very least the film will evidently include the story of the man trying to catch a rainbow ...
I only caught the first handful of episodes myself and didn't even realize they were making a movie as well.
The show was very unique and I hope it will eventually get picked up for a US release.
That said I hope they just call this movie Mushishi and not "Bug Master" for the english title as the heading of that site seems to imply.
Also I like Jo Odagiri alot but for some reason he doesn't 100% have the look that fits the role of the main character to me but I can see his demeanor and acting style fitting it well so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
My guess is they'll just pick some of the favorite stories and make the movie episodic and not one main storyline.
mushishi owns! not sure about the movie from these stills though...the main actor does not not really look the part. also, the long white hair is too cheap looking, lol. i still can;t wait to see this though.
*thumbs up*
Kind of disappointing they seem to be aiming for a vaguely jidai-geki feel to it... it's an alternate reality, it's _not_ feudal Japan (I'm fairly sure I remember the creator saying that, what with Ginko using things like syringes and cigarettes). And it does seem a little cheap, though I'm not so naive as to assume it'd get a particularly big budget. :P
Still, Christ, the woman with white hair... oh please, let that mean they're doing Ginko's backstory ep. as part of the movie storyline. Please, please, please...! I can't think of any other character that could be and that's pretty much one of my favourite episodes of any TV series ever, animated or otherwise.
And yeah, Jo Odagiri doesn't look much like Ginko... but I'm reasonably confident he could get the feel of the character spot on nonetheless. I can't think of any other Japanese actor who's got the sleepy, reserved yet intelligent and compassionate thing going on in quite the same way.
Never seen the show, didn't even know it existed but Otomo behind the camera gets me intrigued.
the stills are awesome. i'm halfway through with the anime and i'm liking it very much. not surprised that Odagiri got Gingko's role. hope he does it justice.
It's playing TIFF in the Visions programme
The stills aren't there anymore :( Anyone wanna host them on imageshack or something and post a few links?
