Is Snake Plissken Heading To The Stars?

(Posted In Action Cult Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

escape01.jpgNow, this is an odd bit of synchronicity as just yesterday I was talking with someone about how I think John Carpenter's Escape From LA has been unfairly maligned ...

The good people over at Bloody Disgusting have just posted what, if it turns out to be true, could be by far the biggest cult movie news of the year. Escape From Earth is a go. Yes, there will be a third entry in the Escape series, based on a script written eight years ago with Carpenter at the helm and Kurt Russell once again donning the tight leather pants. Which is a bit creepy at his age, honestly, but I'm prepared to overlook that.

All the details are here.

Thanks to BtoFu for the news.

'Escape From NY' is a classic, but 'Escape From LA' unjustly maligned? That movie wasn't maligned enough. It was almost a page by page remake of the first film but with more asinine action sequences. The surfing scene alone with its ridiculously bad effects is enough to sink almost any film, but combine it with how Carpenter ripped one of his own best movies off from frame one to the closing credits and you have a seriously disappointing and depressing pile of celluloid poo. And I love Carpenter! I just don't think he's made a worthwhile flick in almost two decades. His 'Masters of Horror' entry was pretty good though... So I'll still be first in line for the new one... And I'll be hoping the master can shine on the big screen again.

Yeah, I wanted to like L.A. so much but it really couldn't justify itself. Carpenter publically stated he was doing it to get a big fat check, so why should I be surprised when it is a xerox of his original? It had a few good moments but on a whole is bad. Interestingly, the script I have for it is a bit better, with more action and stuff. As for ESCAPE FROM EARTH, I'd love to see it but I doubt it will happen.

OMG! Escape from Earth will OWN! I'll be there opening day! What ever happened with the "anime" they were making? Was that just a rhumor?

I think that ESCAPE FROM LA was perfectly justly maligned. It's been years since I saw it, to be fair, but it definitely seemed to suck at the time and I can't imagine it improving with age. And, um, space? Seriously? When has a previously Earthbound franchise ever benifited from being launched into space? OK, JASON X has its fans. But Snake in space? I have a really bad feeling about this. Bring on the anime instead.

I'd imagine, just a leap of logic and assumption here, that he would only be in space at the end. If it follows the logic of the previous films and his "escaping" from those places meant he spent 90% of the film there. So... Escape from Earth would feature him being on Earth for the lion's share of the film.

Just guessing here, though. I have no idea.

Wasn't there supposed to be an Escape from Washington DC script out there somewhere? I don't remember if this was before or after "Escape from LA". "Escape from LA" is silly, but I still find myself tuning in on it from time to time when it shows up on tv. I have a sentimental attachment to "Escape From New York", mostly because it was filmed in my home town (St. Louis) but as much as I have admired the Carpenter-Russell pairings in the past, I'd like to see them break new ground. Here's my suggestion: "John Carpenter's Moby-Dick" with Russell as Ahab.

I'd like to see Snake on a plane. Oh, wait..

Kurt Russel is one of those actors who doesn't seem to age at all. He couls still pull off a Thing sequel. Escape from LA was a huge steaming pile of donkey shit even though it featured Bruce Campbell and Pam Grier pre Jackie Brown, when she was still hot as shit and fuckable. I've heard about Escape Earth ever since LA came out and if I remember correctly it was very similar to the Give me Liberty story that had that main character do an asignment on earth and get the fudge out before it's too late. But Carpenter and Russel together is usualy gold, except for that one time.

The image of Kurt Russel floating around in space with a machine gun is too good for me to not look forward to.

I'm with you Todd, Escape from LA is an overlooked movie. Nobody did get the intentional bmovie feeling. I got that definently after Ghost of Mars. It's like Carpenter saying: Look i'm making bmovies like there used to be and if people don't like that, i don't give a shit.

But please, make that Western in development since ... i don't know how long.

Carpenter has churned out a string of really poor movies for such a long time now, he really needs to listen to the fans and get himself a collaborator who can steer him in the right direction re: fx and decent actors, I mean, name me one decent movie he's made in last 10 years or so that can even deserve to shine the shoes of his older movies like The Thing, The Fog, Halloween, Escape from New York, even Big Trouble in Little China pisses on his later efforts! Ghosts of Mars...yawn.. Vampires..snore... A once great genre film maker is just a shadow of his once great self. Very sad indeed. I'm a fan of his old stuff, and still regularly dig out all his classics. But ahemm! regarding Escape from Earth, and Kurt Russell in space...remember Soldier? I have a very bad feeling about this!!! But I hope Carpenter can pull it around and get back on track to something like his old classic self.

You all can rest easy as this rumour is as false as my trophy girlfriend. John Carpenter and his wife/producer have said that this has never gone passed the idea fase and that was around the time Escape from LA came out.
Sad cause I could really go for Snake sometime soon.

Escape from LA is a post-modern classic.

Seriously.
