Update: Jackie Chan and Jet Li project almost happening

(Posted In Action Film News Martial Arts USA and Canada )

JJ-project.jpgYahoo Movies has some details of the current status on the long-awaited Jackie Chan & Jet Li project:

"All the hurdles have been overcome. The only problem left is the script," Chan told The Associated Press after a press conference to promote his new action comedy, "Rob-B-Hood."

"We need a script that he approves and I approve. If that goes well, shooting will start in March or April in Shanghai," he said.

Asked about the plot, Chan suggested it will be action-oriented fare, saying he and Li must defer to the movie's Hollywood backers.

"It will be more American-style. It will be more suited to foreign audiences than Chinese audiences," he said. "If you make a Hollywood movie, of course you have to follow their wishes. They're paying us so much money."

As long as the script allows Jackie and Jet to showcase their kung fu talent to the best of their ability then I'll be happy.

GOOD! I hope it will be a modern movie without any wires, and they just fight empty handed. I also think Jet should not be so much doubled for the fighting. I know if will get doubled for stunts, thats okey, but he should do his own kicks atleast

» Posted by robin løvli at August 1, 2006 02:06 PM

Yeah I agree I don't want to see retarded wire work like in some of Jet's movies such as Romeo Must Die. I heard Jet Li has knee problems that bother him so maybe that's why he has stunt doubles.

Jet does not have wire in Kiss of Dragon and Danny the Dog and most of modern day flix, Many films he made was period wuxia the hero knows light step kung fu so those films some wire is used, even in those films most of the fights are ground fighting.

» Posted by ox at August 1, 2006 03:42 PM

Jackie Chan uses alot of wires in the Myth, NPS, and has been using wire since DM2. Donnie Yen uses a lot of wire in Iron monkey, Twin effect 2, Shanghai knight, Seven swords.. Using wire is not a privilege of Jet. It depends on the script whether it is a wuxia or a sci fi or whatever then decide whether wire will be used or not used. Period.

» Posted by ox at August 1, 2006 03:48 PM

Jet did use wires in Danny The Dog but only a couple of times.

I have a bad feeling on this one.

I just get the idea it's ..not going to come out rosy.

(Great choice of word there.)

I hope they do the responsible thing and remake Twins. Give the fans what they want, anything else is selfish. Especially since "They're paying us so much money." Do the right thing. Cameo by Arnie and Devito? C'mon, don't tell me I'm the only one who's had the dream of seeing those four together.

» Posted by Tom at August 1, 2006 10:09 PM

I disagree with the guy who said they should remake Twins, it would interfere with my Hulk Hogan/Carrot Top version I was planning.

» Posted by Tyler Foster at August 1, 2006 10:33 PM

they should hire Tony Jaa to kick both their ass

» Posted by jiggaman at August 2, 2006 12:50 AM

Twins? That's the most idiotic idea I've ever heard.
Plot Outline: A physically perfect, but innocent, man goes in search of his twin brother, who is a short ugly small-time crook. Obviously Jackie isn't a physically perfect man and Jet is hardly a ugly small time crook. Jackie is 1.74m and Jet is 1.69m, there is hardly a huge difference in height and Jet is much younger than Jackie to play twin. Grow a brain. (Btw, in Dtd wire is used mainly to hold back the force, eg he will not crush the bones of that guy when he is stepping on him like a mad dog.)

The previous story line when Zhang Yimou was on board is something like DeNiro Midnight Run, but Jet was not sure if he will be in it. Now the story line is somewhat like Journey to the West, maybe JC will play the monkey and Jet will play the monk(since he dreams so much to be a monk it will certainly satisfy his monkish wish)

"If you make a Hollywood movie, of course you have to follow their wishes. They're paying us so much money."

Integrity for sale, folks! OF COURSE, some white guy in a suit knows more about what should be in a martial arts film than two legends in the field who have practically been the face of the genre in our time.

It isn't as if these guys are going to try and imitate tarkovsky or something. I'm sure if left to thier own devices they would put out a harder, more action packed film than under the thumb of some pansy hollywood studios which have failed to put out a SINGLE quality action film with either of these stars over the last DECADE. Oh, maybe it will be like Rush Hour, but with TWO asians. Or like Shanghai Knights, but with... TWO ASIANS! Or like Romeo Must Die AND The Tuxedo PUT TOGETHER! The mind reels!

All interest and hope for this collaboration has gone out the door for me, have fun guys.

Why would Jet Li want to make a movie with Jackie, his latest movies from Hero, Unleashed to Fearless have pretty good reviews with IMDB rating from 7.2 to 8.1, I would rather he continue to make quality movies than make some slapstick which is not his forte.

» Posted by rainbow6 at August 2, 2006 05:39 AM

I think this can be really good or really bad. I hope it's a comedy though, because I'm not a big fan of Jackie in dramatic roles. Jet Li, however, can pull of comedic roles really well.

» Posted by ChrisP at August 2, 2006 08:47 AM

They can't hire Tony Jaa because the moment he speaks it'll kill everyone's buzz. Have you heard his normal voice in Thai? Imagine that in English.

» Posted by ed at August 2, 2006 02:03 PM

Tony Jaa doesn't have to speak. He'll play the silent killer like Jet Li in Lethal Weapon. I just wanna see him deliver one of his patented elbows to Jackie's cranium

» Posted by jiggaman at August 2, 2006 10:39 PM

I could be wrong, but I thought Jet Li wasn't going to make anymore martial arts movies.

» Posted by enygma at August 3, 2006 12:07 AM

It is lost in translation. Jet not making movies ABOUT wushu (like Fearless which explains the philosophy of wushu in its highest form), but he will continue to make movies WITH wushu,eg he will be starring in Yuen Woo Ping directed 'Great Wall' next year.

I am glad that it wasn't Jet Li's last movie. I thought he was way to young to retire. I hope he doesn't start making movies like he mentioned when creating his playstation 2 game. CGI Jet Li won't work, lol. I have to agree on the wire thing. I have mixed feelings on wire work. Jackie Chan has mostly avoided wires for most of his movies (or atleast appears that way). That is what I like about Jackie Chan is that he can fight and adds comedy to his work, but without wires most of the time. Jackie Chan in my opinion is slightly a more realistic fighter in that he uses his surroundings, doesn't use gravity defying moves, and his fighting isn't perfect in that he does take hits. Jet Li is more of a wired style fighter, but some movies don't. The bad thing about all the wire use is that I know Jet Li has some major skill since he earned all those gold medals back before he started making movies. The wire work is cool and I have to mention Once Upon a Time in China when I mention that. They all have different styles. It will be interesting to see how Jet Li and Jackie Chan will display their skill. Will they have major fights, small fights, one on one, wired, non-wired, etc?

The thing I hate the most is all my favorite martial arts stars are slowly leaving. Sammo Hung, Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. I know all of them are at different point and some not yet, but soon. What is sad is that there are only two stars left for martial arts after they are all gone. Only Zhang Ziyi (not sure on her true skill or if it is all train for the scene) and Tony Jaa. (There are more of course, but non are as popular) Tony Jaa seems to be the next best thing. Not alot of comedy with him, but he is the first martial artist since Jet Li, Bruce Lee, and Jackie Chan to make me say ouch and that wasn't fake in the movie. If you have seen Ong-Bak there are some cool scenes where he takes out a guy with one kick, kicks someone through one door of a truck and out the other, breaking a motorcycle guys helmet and forcing him off the bike, and much more. It will be interesting to follow his career. Can't wait to see the Tom-Yum-Goong movie in English. I just hope that we can get atleast three more movies with Jackie Chan and Jet Li before they retire. It will be very hard for me to hear when Jackie Chan retires because he is hands down my favorite.

Donnie Yen did it again! He said Jackie Chan is too old and too slow in a TV interview!

Jackie IS old and slow. There's a reason there's so much wire and CG assist in his recent films, he can't do it himself anymore. The Yen / Chan faceoff in the second Shanghai film made it pretty clear Jackie's not in Yen's class anymore, Donnie was pretty obviously holding back through that whole fight, not at all like a Yen / Li fight where you can see them pushing each other further.

Not that this takes anything away from Jackie's body of work - which is amazing - but he's getting up there in age now and that takes its toll on any body, never mind one that's been pushed as hard and damaged as much as Jackie's.

it is no class for donnie to bash jackie openly especially when jackie gives him the chance in twin effects (produced by jc)and shanghai. but again it isn't his first time to bash others to raise his profile and it won't be his last time.

» Posted by don at August 6, 2006 11:46 PM

i think that the biggest asian martial art stars are said to be making a movie and they will show us the best of their skill without any wires or fabricated stunt . i think it will big business for the producer also becuase thes two stars are are the heart throb of whole world of martial arts lovers

» Posted by tenpatsering at November 6, 2006 07:41 AM

y'know, i think jet & jackie are pretty good martial artists and i look forward to seeing the movie but one thing bout it is that it is probably going to be spoiled by Robert Minkoff (director).

» Posted by fox at December 2, 2006 12:52 AM

Philip Rhee who made Best of The Best series is also one of the big martial art movie stars. Although he hasn't made any he hasn't made any official announcement and hence there's still Tony Jaa and Philip Rhee to think about even after Jackie Chan and Jet Li. And about Donnie Yen making fun of Jackie Chan... WHO CARES? Who's more famous still? Jackie or Donnie? So shut your gob Donnie!
