...it's not what you think.
You know by now 괴물 (The Host) is out in Korea, and to realize that you'd need just a peek at most major Korean Message Boards (like DC), filled with thousands of posts about the little Monster. But no, here's something else which might interest you folks.
Director Bong Joon-Ho spoke a little about the upcoming DVD of his latest film, commenting that they felt really sad about leaving expensive shots of the monster on the cutting floor, as it would be like throwing away 2-300 Million Won. So what? He's putting all of them in the DVD. We're dealing with 10 extra cuts, and although he says they're great little shots, when we see the deleted scenes we'll know why they were cut. Bong also revealed he requested 6.1 Channels audio right from the beginning, so you audiophiles will probably be happy. He also says 'I think this DVD might become reference material in the (Korean) DVD Market. Watching DVD releases today they often seem to have that monotonous, cosmetics-like quality to them. So what we're trying to do is create something interesting to watch. I've started giving material to the DVD production staff ever since we started shooting, just like with 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder), and I think this will be even better."
When can we get our hands on this Monster of a DVD? I don't know. If it takes a while it means the film is doing well, and that's not a bad deal after all. It's Bong Joon-Ho.
In other news, Korean critics' 'most hated film of the year' 한반도 (Hanbando) just hit the 3 Million tickets, landing on 2nd place for 2006 -- until the Baby Monster starts getting hungry. Kang Woo-Suk strikes again.... [Yahoo News]
"monotonous, shopping mall-like quality to them"
I don't know where he gets his DVDs from but Korean DVDs are far from the bargain bin material you will find so often elsewhere. Some of the finest disks available.
haha... must have been really tired this morning. I read 백화점 (shopping mall) instead of 화장품(cosmetics). He simply means they focus too much on the outside appearance and not enough on the inside.
Sorry. Fixed. :-P
Aaah. Makes sense now.
Maybe that means he'll subtitle the special features in English, that would be extravagent, eh? Sure wouldn't be cosmetic...
I heard the story of 괴물 from my friend now who watched the movie last night. According to my friend, it is so so good. In the movie, we can read very critical messages. Mr. Bong shows what a real monster is in this world.
Saw the Host 2 weeks ago at the International Chicago Film Festival. Saw it twice - they added a special third screening at the largest theater - it sold out - this movie is so incredible. First time I saw it, I'm walking out thru the lobby grinning - elated and stop dead in my tracks totally weirded out - I had never felt happier seeing any film - and I had just seen a monster movie!! Took three people to the last screening - ages 23, 21 & 28 - and they were blown away also. In the classic 'Jaws' everyone jumped out of their seats one time. Seeing Host - I jumped 4 times the first time, and was able to control myself the second time - only jumped 3 times.
