Jason Gray, lucky man that he is, has just had a peak at the Studio Ghibli adaptation of Ursula K LeGuin's A Wizard of Earthsea and while the controversial choice of Goro Miyazaki as the director - a decision soundly thrashed by Goro's famous father Hayao Miyazaki - had some worried, Gray comes out sounding remarkably positive. "I can say that I was quite impressed with Miyazaki Goro's directorial debut. I think in some ways he may have overextended himself in his first outing, but the film definitely has the Ghibli hallmarks of quality."
You can read all of Jason's thoughts here and he is happy to field questions about the film via his blog.
Damn, he got to see it before me... The world's unfair! :(
Well, at least he's positive about it, as some Yahoo.co.jp users had voted it a bit badly. Now if I can only see it myself... Anyway, saturday will be the day of Gedo Senki's nationwide release (in Japan of course) and I'm curious to hear what other people will think of it. On the other hand, there are Ghibli films that some people vote badly and which I enjoy a lot, so I guesss it doesn't really matter what other people think of it > as long as I like it myself! ^_^
As ever, this is the first I've heard of this project and I'm delighted. _Wizard of Earthsea_ is one of my favorite trilogies and some years back I had the great pleasure of interacting with LeGuin a few times at seminars.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie, so I'm glad to see/hear positive reviews from people lucky enough to have caught an advanced screening. Can't wait for the release!!
Japanese press were not so kind. Yahoo Movies rewarded the film 2.4 out of 5 (lower than Pokemon Movie) and the first wave of Japanese reviews say the movie is a bad one. (Could be the whole Hayao vs Goro vibe the press has been on for months now: Miyazaki is Japan's animation darlink and ever since he said he was against his son directing a film I think a lot of people have been waiting for the moment to write that bad review).
More info at animenewsnetwork.com about the bad reviews.
Just saw the movie. If you are an Earth Sea fan, you will be highly disappointed. If you are a Ghibli fan, you will be even more disappointed. If you are not a fan on any of the above, then don't bother seeing the movie in the theater cause you'll regret wasting your money to go see it. In hindsight, I should have taken up the reviewers suggestion and seen that Pokemon movie instead. Heck, even watching grass grow would have been more entertaining than this movie (ok, not true, but pretty close).
