I guess its an ad campaign...No different than some animated films like Pixar that license their characters for McDonald commercials.

well, the reason the characters look like theyre "from akira" (as it were) is because theyre by otomo and thats his style - as for "kid on bike = akira rip-off" well, bikes are mass-produced products and youll be seeing them everywhere for many years to come :)

Sorry, what I meant was of course "CG Kaneda riding his bike". Just because it's Otomo doesn't mean it must have a clone of Kaneda in it doing his Kaneda thing. Kaneda wasn't in Otomo's segment of NEO TOKYO nor was he in ROJIN-Z. Don't know if he was in STEAMBOY because I've avoided it thus far but I really doubt it. I'm pretty sure this isn't Otomo's fault, though. Most likely they asked him to get attached and paid a tidy bundle of yen so they could put a Kaneda look-alike in it to get some attention.

massive over-simplification. otomos character design style is otomos character design style. pure and simple.

massive generalization. dude looks exactly like kaneda. otomo is very capeable of designing male characters that don't look like kaneda's twin.

I wouldn't over estimate Otomo's abilities. His designs(especially female) arent that great and havent seemed to improve much over the years.. at least he's at a level higher than Akira Toriyama who seems to like re-creating the same chracters over and over.
