Bent Hamer's Factotum Hits US Screens August 18th

(Posted In Continental Europe and Russia Drama Film News Trailer Alert )

Factotum.jpgYep, Bukowski via Norway finally hitting screens in the US. Here's the official synopsis:

"Henry Chinaski (Matt Dillon) considers himself a writer, and on occasion writes. Mostly he quests for the booze and women that sidetrack and seduce, rather than inspire greatness. When he falls for Jan (Lili Taylor), the soulful connection fails to save either from their self-destructive ways, and the relationship totters between earnest connection and reflective loathing. With exceptional performances that capture the intoxicated journey though life and art, Factotum is the story of a man living on the edge; a writer who risks everything, tries anything, and finds poetry in life’s pleasure and pain."

The film will hit theaters in New York and LA on August 18th and expand to other cities in the following weeks.

I saw Factotum at the SF International. It's where I picked up the wonderful line: "I've slept longer than you've lived." I'm not a Bukowski fan, like so many others, but for a Bukowski vehicle I felt Matt Dillon's performance was the most palatable. He underplays to comic effect. The best reason to see the movie, however, is Lili Taylor who is downright exceptional as the out-of-it-half-the-time love interest. There's a scene where he gets up, goes to the bathroom, pukes, returns to bed, then she gets up, goes to the bathroom, pukes, returns to bed. Too funny for being too true.

Further, Bay Area colleague Sara Schieron interviewed Bent Hamer at the festival and the "shicast" can be found at:

Great film, if Bukowski-lite - but I loved it all the way. Dillon is a great Chinaski!

Been on R2 DVD for a while, but worth seeing at the flicks.. I did.
