'Epitafios'. Crime TV from Latin America - What Else Is Out There Like This?

(Posted In Cult DVD News Drama Horror Random Geek Talk TV Thriller )

epitafios.jpgWith the main focus here, there's a R1 USA DVD release set for the complete first season of 'Epitafios' - an HBO Production - and I am also going to say that, as with a couple of previous posts, I am looking also for suggestions on other shows out there I might be missing out on of a similar ilk.

Here in the UK, because of out nature - the interest in the darker side of human life - Crime Drama TV is one of the absolute key staples of what's produced. In all its shades, commerical and light to surprisingly dark and explicit, the 'Prime Suspect' and 'Cracker' shows that have transfered globally are the tip of the iceberg to say the least, and even more commercial or light Crime programs like 'Hustle' have gone down well in the USA. Infact, far too many to mention here really effectively, so if you've a taste for this kind of stuff, point out any and all you think others should track down.

We have nice dark stuff like 'Blood in the Wire', 'Messiah', 'Rebus' (as in Ian Rankin's books) for the better examples you might not have heard of, and we have more Comedy-Drama mixes too like the very popular 'Midsommer Murders', 'Dalziel and Pascoe' or 'Frost' (I suppose, but that's David Jason more than the scripting), and 'Murder In Suburbia' which has lots of cameos from Comedy Actors and Actresses.

Personally, I like the dark and nasty ones. The lengthier, more complicated, almost-film-quality scripts and production values - but they also stay relatively easy to watch and follow. Anyway, anyone seen 'Epitafios'? Gets good reviews as a Serial Killer Drama that's engrossing, and it has to be worth a nose if youre looking for something different. Hey, we don't get many contemporary Foreign Language TV shows (let's hope that changes when the new higher-capacity formats take hold) that we would need to watch with English Subtitles / from countries other than North America - also, fingers crossed that the upcoming French DVD set of 'Engrenages' (shown in the UK on BBC Four as 'Spiral') has a English Subtitles (due August 2006 over there).

Yes, TV is relatively on-a-plate, but easy to watch and longer-lasting it is : if the balance is right it's not paper-thin, if it's wrong it's far too obvious and derivative. The good example are...?

"Epitafios" was produced/filmed in Argentina. After that (almost back to back) HBO did "Mandrake" in Rio, which is more of a sex/drugs/crime show (think "Soprano's", definitely nothing like "City Of God" or even "Pusher") with noir undertones to it (it revolves around the misfortunes of Mandrake, a criminal laywer).

Doesn't get mentioned much on this site but HBO's THE WIRE is IMO the best cop/crime/drama series ever. The show has a huge cult following and the 4th season starts in Sept.

I've spoken at great lengths on other forums about the show and what attracts most is the great writing and realism of the show. Most of the hardcore fans I've spoken to are from the UK.

I have to agree with Nitty. It's worth repeating, The wire is the best show America has produced in years.

Not best crime drama, or best cop drama, or best drama about the drug war.

Best drama. Period. Each season is laid out more like a novel than your standard television show, every episode is crucial to understanding, most of the show's writers are novelists, with the rest being reporters or ex-cops.

I buy each seaon as it comes out on DVD, lend it out to as many people as possible. And it's been years since I've seen such a wide spectrum of people like it. From my ex-con dad, to my hippie mom to my hipster friends, everyone watches the first episode...and is a bit confused by the methodical pace and lack of quick action. They watch the 2nd and 3rd, and are a bit interested. By episode 5 they agree that nothing better is being produced in the U.S.

King Mob I do the same with my friends. Most are either cops or crooks. They all agree "they finally got it right".

I've spoken to many behind the scenes people from the show and your right about them bringing in many novelists like George Pelecanos,ex cops and cons which makes the show feel like a novel.

Its a shame that many dissmiss it as another "ghetto show about the hood".I love how the writers did a complete 360 the second season and focused on the longshoremen and the coruption on the docks. It was kinda like a modern take of On The Waterfront.
